I've been through the malware forum and am clean of any malware.

I would say the following happens half the time. When I boot windows, it'll take a LONG time to load up. After everything it loaded, system resources remain at 40%, and any time I run a program they jump to 100%, and if I try and watch a video it's choppy,

Again, this happens half the times I boot up my computer. The other times it runs just fine.

Thanks in advance for any help.

1. Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

2. Download, install, and run Whats Running.
Click on Take snapshot in the left pane.
New pop-up window will open.
Click on Save snapshot, and save the file as snap (.xml extension will be added automatically) to know location.

Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T5470 @1.60Ghz
2046 MB RAM
107GB, 68.2GB Used
AVG Free 8.5 and COMODO Firewall (installed recently, AFTER all the problems)

I booted the computer up a few times, and took a snapshot of when it booted up normally AND slowly. I've include both in the attachment. Maybe there's a difference?

Thanks for the quick response!

I really don't see anything interesting....

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Same thing?

Just tried it. Same thing.

It seems to happen in steaks. Like, it'll do it 4 times in a row, then be fine 4 times in a row.

Also, I know when it's going to happen. If the "Please Wait" screen before I enter my password to log into Windows last for 5 seconds or so, the computer will boot slowly. If "Please Wait" just flashes for a split second, then I know it'll be a normal boot up and everything will work fine.

Any idea why this is?

Run memtest: http://www.techspot....topic62524.html

Do you have more than one RAM stick installed?

I have two (1GB) sticks of RAM installed. I just did the memtest with no errors. Do I need to test one at a time?

Even better, remove one stick, and start the computer. How is it?
Then, switch sticks.

Since the slow boot happens half the time, I'll probably have to run a few trials on each just to make sure. I'll report back hopefully soon. Thanks

Alright, so it's not the RAM. I tested both sticks and they both booted up slow. I thought it could be another hardware situation like my fan, because it wasn't booting up with the fan. But that didn't seem to have an effect on it, either.

Any other ideas?

What do you mean by: "because it wasn't booting up with the fan"?

As soon as I boot my computer (this is a laptop) the fan should come on, right?

Right now the fan comes on at some point when windows is loading. Does that mean anything or is that normal? Could this be a fan issue that leads to an overheated hard drive?

The "slowness" seems to come in spirts. For example, I'll boot it up 5 straight times and it'll be fine. Then I'll boot it 5 straight times and it'll be slow. I never boot it up and one time it's slow, I restart, and the next time it's fast.

Fan should be the very first thing running, because the processor will heat up in a split second.
Was it always like that, or you just noticed?
And, how did you notice?

I don't know how long it's been doing that, but I just noticed it.

I reason I thought of it was because the fan stopped working on my last laptop. It didn't slow down the computer, but that's what made me think it might be a problem.

So, yeah, the fan doesn't get started until a few minutes after the computer boots up.
