I recently got a SimpleTech 1TB external hard drive, and with it came a "Total Media Backup & Record" program. I installed it and a "Button Manager".

However, the next time I turned on my computer, I discovered that both of them are now start-up programs, and what's more, Vista's User Account Control has blocked Button Manager from running as a start-up program. I'm able to make it run later on, but I have to do this everytime I turn on the computer.

When I go to Windows Defender to see the list of start-up programs, I seem to be unable to remove both Button Manager (inihid.exe) and the Total Media Backup & Record, both some of the other can.

Is there any way to remove both of them as startup programs or at least unblock the Button Manager without turning of the User Account Control?

Try this free program: http://www.microsoft...s/Autoruns.mspx
You can remove the startup items with this.

As for the issue with UAC - the program probably runs in such a way that it activates UAC. The solution would be to see if SimpleTech has released a Vista compatible version

Here's the support link for SimpleTech: http://www.simpletec...t_downloads.php
And here's a link to ArcSoft (the manufacturer of the program): http://www.arcsoft.c...ic/download.asp

I wonder if the backup software was a trial or OEM version that's limited in what uses you are entitled to. In short, contacting SimpleTech's customer support may be your best option.
