Hello, i've been trying to fix this problem i've been having with my computer recently. When i turned my comp on a few days back it started running reeeeeally slowly. The the task manager said explorer.exe was using up 98% of my CPU processes. I installed and scanned in both safe and normal modes with Spybot: S&D, Adaware, and Symantec (all had the most current versions, upgrades, etc). There were a few trojans and some minor cookies. The programs quarantined/cleaned all of these and pronounced my system problem-free.

Unfortunately, my computer is still bogged down horribly, and explorer continues to eat up system resources. I feared it might be a variant of CoolWeb, so i ran CWShredder in "scan only" mode, and it found a file called VX2.Look2Me, or something like that. When i went back in the "scan and fix mode" CWShredder could no longer find it. It also couldn't find it in safe mode after the initial "scan only" scan i did.

Has anyone else had an experience like this? I'm just about at my wits end on what to do. Included below is the Adaware log. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide!

If your system is running a program which changes the hosts file or you have added listings to the hosts file then there is no need to check further. Otherwise, please download the "Host File Viewer" by Option^Explicit. It is a 65K program which will allow you to find/view/open/read/edit/restore to default settings your HOST file. Instructions are on the display screen of the program. Select the option to restore to default settings.

Hmm....I don't think i have any programs that modify the hosts file. Forgive my ignorance, but what type of programs would generally mess around with that file? I'm logging in from work right now, so i can't really check to see what programs could be doing anything with the host file, but i'll be sure to run that program first thing when i get home.

As far as the logfile being clean, as of the time that i performed this scan (last night), yes i was still having the same performance slow downs.

Something else i forgot to add- Whenever i boot up in safe mode, the problem with the performance slowdown and explorer.exe using 90+ percent of the cpu time is not occouring. I don't know if that bit of info helps, I just thought it seemed pertinent.

Entries in your host file can be good and bad.

Some protection programs use the host file to block certain sites.
