my mothers laptop is slow, it takes about 45 minutes to start and 3 minuets to open a standard text document. its only 3 years old with 512mb ram, 12mb video card, fire fox 3, 100gb hd, windows xp home with sp3 and is fully updated, about 466 mb pf being used normally, about 69 processes regularly being used, the grid on the CPU usage averagely is at 10%, 4 users: me, mom, dad, and ted, takes 30 seconds to load a web page, windows live one care suite, malware bytes found only adware.minibug and cureit found warnings of Trojan.backdoor in the AOL folder, about 69 things in start up in msconfig, yahoo messenger, and it had mcafee 2006 and Norton 2005 at different times but there no longer on.

i also fixed it from a constant bsod by running chkdsk in a dos-like prompt in the windows disk, im using hijackthis for a quick way to sow the processes, BUT JUST THE PROCESSES, tell me if you would like to see the rest of the log.

oh yea, one last thing, i used atf_cleaner and it cleaned out about 3.5 gigs oh the hd.

tell me if you need anything else

about 69 things in start up in msconfig

That is too much for a computer with 512mb of RAM.
I have 2GB of RAM and only have 17 programs in my startup.

You can disable utilities such as
C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA Applet\TAPPSRV.exe

Give me a list of what is in your MSconfig, as startup.
Just attach a picture instead of typing everything.

Do you mean after you did the registry tweak. I have never seen it cause any problems.
You can always download the reset script.

Give me the msconfig screenshot.

All right then. Tell me what caused the internet to go down. Was it the registry tweak?

Then download the default settings .reg file.
And add it to your registry.

We now need to make certain that this issue is not malware because if we troubleshoot otherwise we may be wasting our time.

I suggest you go to the Malware Forum and run all the steps located in the Malware and Spyware Cleaning Guide.

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

All right then. Post if you need help in the Malware Forum.

Once all malware has been cleared, and the laptop is still slow, post back here.
