Over the past week my computer has been terribly slow. To a point where its takes me forever to do my homework. The internet is extremly slow and opening up programs and what not is also very slow. It wasn't like this a couple of weeks ago and im starting to wonder what the problem might be. Any help would be greatly apprectiated.

If this is a name brand system:
Make
Model
Operating System
Age of the computer
Memory Total
Hard Drive Size, How much free space



If this is custom then We will need the following:

The CPU brand and model
The Motherboard brand and model
Ram amount and speed
Cd\Dvd rom interface IDE/
Hard Drive size and free space
Any cards in PCI slots

In Addition please supply:

Any software installed\updated and driver updates done just before problem started.
Any hardware installed\updated prior to problem starting.

All this will help in determining a course of action to best correct the problem you are experiencing.

not sure how to find memory total

Push and hold the Windows key on keyboard. This is the one with the microsft windows logo on it. While holding win key down click on the Puase\Break key

This should open system properties window
On this window it will show

System info:

Microsoft Windows type and version
Service Pack number

Registered Name
Register Number

Computer:
CPU type
Memory

I need all the above info in your next reply except for Register name and number. This is private and we don't need to know this information

While replying with that info do the following steps in order and reply back with the results for each. When each step is done then try your system and see if it is any faster. Let me know

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If this does not work then:

Go to
Start>>My Computer>>Right Click On 'C" drive>>Properties
Click on Tools tab at the top
In the Error Checking field click Check Now

When that is done
In Defragmentation field click Defragment Now



Reboot and let me know how system is running now

Ok then do it this way
Go to
Start >right click on My Computer>Properties
In this window you will see information on what xp version you have. The service pack you have
below you will have registration info(skip this as we don't need the information)
Bottom you will see Cpu and memory
I need the bottom information

Continue on with the other steps also after you have gotten the information

I defragged and its still running reaaaaaally slow.

One problem I see already and that is your ram. 504 mb of ram is just barely enough to run XP.
I would suggest doubling that as it will help allot. Go Here and run the online scanner. It will tell you exactly what memory you have and then you can use that to find the best price for it. I can assist with that also if you would like.

Let's try a different Defrag program that works better then Windows. Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Install it and let it run.I like it much better because it will show you exactly how much speed you picked up after it is finished. Also let's see if we can disable some unneeded programs from starting up automatically when windows starts.

Lets see what you have in your startup

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck programs that are not needed and that you can start when you need them. Programs like printer and chat programs can bottle neck your speed to sit and run in the background. If you want you can open msconfig and make sure it is showing everything and then take a screen shot and attaching it to your next reply. Follow these steps:

Next click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start
All Programs
Accessories
Paint
In the empty white area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V key.
Go to the File option at the top and click on save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your desktop

[b]In your next reply attach the screen shot. If your attachment is to big to attach then go to Mediafire . Register and upload your file. Then reply with the link located to the right of your now uploaded file on Mediafire
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a start up problem

I'm sorry for butting in, but if the computer became slow over last week, or so, I doubt the RAM is a problem here. Surely, having 1GB of RAM would help, but we must have some other issues here, as well.

Download, install, and run Whats Running.
Click on Take snapshot in the left pane.
New pop-up window will open.
Click on Save snapshot, and save the file as snap (.xml extension will be added automatically) to know location.



Zip the file, and attach it to your next reply.

how do i zip the file? i tried using winzip but i keep getting an error message filename of archive is not complete.

To zip a file...
Download, and install 7-zip: http://www.7-zip.org/
Right click on a file, you want to zip.
Click 7-zip, then Add to archive.
Click on drop-down menu, next to Archive format, and select zip format.
Click OK.
You'll find zipped file (.zip extension) in the same folder as the original file.

here is the zip file.... i dont think its memory problem... its just been like this since this week... it takes forever to internet sites to load and any programs to work.
