CPU usage going up and down...

Okay, so I've had my laptop for almost a year now. A while ago, my CPU usage started going up for 60 seconds, then down for 60 seconds, then up again etc on any program I have running. When it goes up, it makes Runescape (or whatever else I'm doing) lag horribly. I've tried tons of registry cleaners, various fixes for Wlan Autoconfig problems (which I know now isn't the cause), turning off automatic updates. I really don't know what the problem is, but it happened around the time when I went from 2GB Ram to 4GB, and deleting the hibernation file.

Thanks in advance, Pteri

It'll only make things worse...

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.micro...s/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

There it is when Runescape wasn't running. And luckily most of the "free" registry cleaners weren't. So I didn't actually end up "fixing" that much :)

Also, I asked my friend who comes round my house frequently, he also thinks that my laptop started doing this after I changed the RAM.

Well, at the moment of your snapshot, System Idle Process shows at 88.64%, which is perfectly normal.
Try to make another snapshot, when CPU usage spikes up.

Here's two shots, one of Runescape without lag, and one with horrid lag.

Edit: Added another file of another spike. It isn't usually svchost that lags me.

In all three cases java.exe is causing a problem, using 34.14%, 45.67%, and 44.57% of the CPU respectively.

Verify your Java version here: http://www.java.com/...d/installed.jsp
Update, if necessary.
Uninstall all previous Java versions, through Add\Remove.

I should probably have mentioned that Runescape is Java-powered, incase you weren't sure.

I tried totally uninstalling all Java stuff through Add/Remove not long ago and then reinstalling. After that, Runescape stopped working, which I fixed by changing the mode to "Force Sun Java" on the website. I went back to the Java site and it said I didn't have the latest version. I've just reinstalled it and it still says this for RS and Java. (Force Sun still works on Runescape though)

I didn't really make it clear :)

On Runescape, it says that I don't have Java installed, so I can't play the game. But there's an option on the Runescape Site to switch to "Force Sun Java." When I switch to this, I can play it.

And it also says on the Java website that I don't have it installed.

Do you? Is it listed in "Programs & Features" in Control Panel?
If so, what version?

Search the computer for java.exe. Where is it located?

Yes, it's in Control Panel. I've got "Java™ 6 Update 13." I believe I used to have Update 6 and 12 before I uninstalled it.

I did a search for Java.exe - no results. I looked in C:\Program Files\Java but it wasn't anywhere there either.

Yep, Java.exe is in System32. (Also javaw.exe and javaws.exe, not sure what they are)

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Hmmm. I did all that, still no change. The installer said that I already had it installed. Java and Runescape still say I haven't got it.
