My current CD/DVD drive has died. It is a Lite-On SHW-160P6S. I was looking at NewEgg for a replacement but they do not provide product support. Can someone recommend a good replacement? The LiteOn I currently have has and IDE connection and I can't find that information in the new product description. I can see where it says SATA. Any advice?

Hello Daddy Duck...

First...are you sure the drive has died? What are the problems you're having?

Newegg has a number of good IDE combo drives you might be interested in. I've had good luck with both the Pioneer drives and the Asus drives, but ther are quite a few to choose from. The "Retail" drives come with cables and software...the OEM drives provide the drive only.

Can i jump in on this for a minute guys?
Just wanted to add to what Wannabe1 suggested. Tigerdirect also has a good assortment of combo drives HERE
As Wnnabe1 says the difference is Retail or OEM

Well, the tray does not open up without some uhhhh, shall we say, coaxing. It doesn't play audio CDs anymore, and it doesn't always create good copies.

Thanks for the link. Is it necessary to replace the cable?

I did find the Sony drive I was initially looking at and it is SATA.

Thanks for the help!

Yup...sounds like a bad drive alright... :)

All the drives at the newegg link I gave you are IDE (PATA) drives.
