Hi hoping someone could help.

Recently i got a Blue screen it would blue screen everytime i restarted the PC, not even chkdsk would work. I researched the problem code (0x00000020) and found it was something to do with my hard drive file. So to fix this file I needed to get into the operating system to repair the file. Iswithced hard drive with a spare one i had.and i have manged to get it into the windows XP log in screen but the mouse or keyboard both don't work. They are both USB and i don't have any PS2 ports so i can't even log into windows to fix anything. can anyone think of something I can to do to get at least one of them working?

We will need some more information

If this is a name brand system:
Make
Model
Operating System
Age of the computer
Memory Total
Hard Drive Size, How much free space



If this is custom then We will need the following:

The CPU brand and model
The Motherboard brand and model
Ram amount and speed
Cd\Dvd rom interface IDE/
Hard Drive size and free space
Any cards in PCI slots

In Addition please supply:

Any software installed\updated and driver updates done just before problem started.
Any hardware installed\updated prior to problem starting.

All this will help in determining a course of action to best correct the problem you are experiencing.

Its hard to answer all them questions as its my sons but will try

its a Dell Dimension 9150
Windows XP
around about 3 years old
2 sticks 256 memory (512 total)
160GB hard drive (around 40GB free space roughly)

There was no hardware installation to it. ive asked my son if he remembers the last things he did before it happened but he can't really remember doing anything different. they heavily game play on it World Of Warcraft etc. But in terms of drastic changes nothing.

Download WhoCrashed from the link in my signature below
This program checks for any drivers which may have been causing your computer to crash....

Click on the file you just downloaded and run it
Put a tick in accept then click on next
Put a tick in the don't create a start menu folder then click next
Put a tick in create a desktop icon then click on install and make sure there is a tick in launch whocrashed before clicking finish
Click Analyze ...
It will want to download the debugger and install it...say yes...
WhoCrashed will create report...you have to scroll down to see it
Copy and paste it into your next reply...

Go to
Start and then click on Run and 2: Type in eventvwr.msc
Press Enter
On left side click on Applications On right side look for any RED X about the time of a incident
On left side click on System. On right side look for any Red X about the same time of a incident
Also look for any yellow exclamation mark at the same time in either of the above
If you find any double click on one at a time and take a screenshot of the first 3 or 4.
Include as a attachment in your next reply

To do a screenshot once you double click on a error do the following:

Click on your Print Screen key on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start
All Programs
Accessories
Paint
In the empty white area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your desktop

If your attachment is to big to attach then go to Mediafire . Register and upload your file. Then reply with the link located to the right of your now uploaded file on Mediafire

I'm sorry, :) Then what we need to do is work outside of windows.
With that then our options are going to be very limited. First of all will the system boot but just not into windows?
If so I need you to do the following:

Boot the system and on the second black posts creen start tapping F8
Then scroll down to the line that says "Auto Start On Error"
Click on that so it is disabled
The system should boot and when it gets to the BSOD it will stop.
Write down the complete error it gives as this will help me find the source of the problem. Include in your next reply.

We will continue from there.

No problem hehe.
when i first boot my computer it goes through the post and then shows the Windows XP splash screen after a few seconds it shows the blue screen showing this error code

***STOP: 0X00000024 (0X00190203, 0X8262EEF0, OXC0000102, 0X00000000)

After some of my own research i have found that the error has something to do with the NTFS file system drives and ive learned that renaming the extention of this file will repair it but i can't get into windows. I tried Recovery Console.... chkdsk /f but it says it appears that this volume has one or more unrecoverable problems so not even recovery console will work...

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
At the first post screen start tapping the Del key to enter system bios
Find the Advance Options or Boot Sequence screen
You will need to change the boot sequence so that the cdrom is first and the hd is second
Press F10 to save and exit, press ok to accept
The system will now reboot

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

ok I tried it and as soon as the list came it it showed a list of disks it recognise then not long after the blue screen came up again with a different code?

Where exactly did the BSOD happen?
While doing the setup?
What error does it give now?

it happened after the screen where i accepted the agreement, it looked like the screen where it chooses the partition to install windows?
the new code was

Well this is not really a good error to get. This error points to several possibility so I'm going to do some testing on these area's before we go any further. Please do these steps in order and reply with results of each as they finish.

Click HD diagnostic in my signature below. Choose the manufacturer of your hd. Download the tool and burn it to a disk if you have one installed or to a cd. Insert it into the appropriate drive and reboot. Running this will tell us if there is a problem with HD itself. If not then we will pursue other hardware or software possibilities


Let's check your memory and make sure there is no issue with it.Donwload memtest86 from the link in my signature below.


Get the file that is named Download - The one you want is "Download - Pre-compiled Bootable ISO (.zip). When it downloads, it will be labeled memtest86+2.11.iso.zip
Unzip the file once you download it. You should have a .iso file in the unzipped directory. It will look like a zip file in some cases but the file name will now be memtest86+2.11.iso

if you don't have a burning program that will burn .ISO files get burncdcc in my signature below.

NOTE...do not put a blank cd in until burncdcc opens the tray for you
1. Start BurnCDCC
2. Browse to the ISO file you want to burn on cd/dvd ....in this case its memtest86.iso
3. Select the ISO file
4. click on Start

Make sure the bios is set for the cd drive as the first boot device
Put the cd in the cd drive and then boot your computer.

Running the Diagnostic Program:

The basic diagnostic screen has five main sections of relevant information. Three at the top which are labeled, PASS %, TEST %, and TEST #. This will basically show you the total progress of the current test, the overall progress of the diagnostic test, and the test number is currently performing.

On the middle left hand side of the of the program interface there is a “Wall Time” section that will keep track of how long the diagnostic test has been running for. This just gives you an idea if you are not attending the testing process.

The main section to look for is the lower half of the screen which is usually blank. As long as the memory testing is going ok with no errors this section of the screen should remain blank. If the diagnostic program finds any serious faults in the memory you will see it display a memory dump of address’s in this section. This is similar to what is displayed on your screen when you encounter a blue screen of death.

You now have most everything you need to know about setting up and testing your memory with diagnostic programs. This guide should help you get to the source of any intermittent problems related to your memory.


Run memtest for at least 2 hours
If it starts showing any errors during that time then you will have to replace the memory
If there are no errors after 2 hours press Esc and that will end the tests
We will then try other options

I don't supppose you know what make of hard drives dell use in their computers do you? I have a Dell Dimension 9150 and I have searched Google for this particular model... i can't seem to find what actual make the hard drive is?
