I uninstalled IE and re-installed it with the link you provided, but I still am unable to open Windows Update. I got the same error message again. I was trying to press on the Windows Update link in my Control Panel and it wasn't working, but if I click on Windows Update in my "All Programs" it opened Internet Explorer and went to windowsupdate.microsoft.com -- so it appears to be working, just not through the Control Panel. Is this a problem? Because I rarely use IE, anyway, and if I can still check for updates through the website, then it shouldn't be a problem, should I? I don't need to fix this "null" issue if it's not really a big deal. What do you think?

Hi

Let's try following.

Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into it. Go to File > save as and name the file fixes.bat, change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop.
@echo off
c:
cd\
dir /a /s wuaucpl.cpl >c:\locations.txt
regedit /a c:\regExport.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\Extended Properties"

Double-click on fixes.bat file to execute it. Please post back the contents of c:\locations.txt and c:\regExport.txt files.

Nothing seems to be out of ordinary there. Please uninstall IE 8. That will leave you with IE 7. See how the system behaves with it.
