I have a start up issue. I had the blue screen flash(unsure what it said). I now cannot start up the computer. I can get to the screen for the F10 and F12 setup options, but then I get a blank screen and no response from anything. I have attempted the F8 for safe mode, but that dos not work either. I have also attempted to recover(boot) from the system operating disk and that too goes to blank screen with no repsonse. I have also reseated the memory chip from HP help reccomendation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you still get the BSOD?
If you can do the following:

Start your system and at the Second post screen tap on F8 to get to the Boot Menu
Scroll down to the line that says"Auto Start On Error" and highlight it.
Click Enter to disable it
The system should reboot and if not then do so.
When the BSOD shows it will stop so that you can reply with the full error message

No response from the F8 key. I get to the HP invent logo with options for F10, F12, and ESC to change boot order, ect.

No I do not get the BSOD. I have no problem restoring the operating system, the computer just won't let me.

This may or may not work since you have a recovery cd for you HP

Repair Installation Instructions
· Insert your Windows XP CD in your CD-ROM and then Restart your computer.
· At the first post screen start tapping the Del key to enter System Bios
· Find the Advance Options or Boot Sequence screen.
· You will need to change the boot sequence so that the CDrom is first and the HD is second.
· Press F10 to Save and Exit and then press Enter to accept.
· The system will now reboot
· When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
· When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER
· To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
· At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. DO NOT SELECT THIS OPTION.

· On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
· Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected and highlighted in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.
· Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Let me know what the results are

No response. I can change the boot order as you described and I get a reboot after saving. The screen displays press any key to boot from cd and then it freezes into a blank screen.

Hmmm this is not good as that indicates it's not a windows problem.

If the system is not under warranty the proceed to the next steps:


Open the case up. To do this look at the system from the front. On the left side you will need to remove the screws from the back of the side panel. Open the case and turn the power on. I need to know the following

There is a fan on top of the cpu which should be located near the top of the motherboard, is that fan continueing to turn when the screen goes black?

There should be another fan located in the back or the front of the case, is that one running the whole time?

Check the back of the power supply and let me know if that fan continues to run when the screen goes black(probably so I expect)

I have an HP Pavillion dv5030us laptop computer. I can't find the screw.

Ahh ok that will be harder to do. I didn't realize this was a laptop. I should have asked to begin with.

Is one of the options you get on bootup a recovery partition?
Should be F10 or F12

Yes I get F10, F12, and esc.

F12 is to boot with LAN. I tried using the F10 and that takes me to the set up but I don't think anything in there is useful for this problem.

Let's check your memory and make sure there is no issue with it.Donwload memtest86 from the link in my signature below.


Get the file that is named Download - The one you want is "Download - Pre-compiled Bootable ISO (.zip). When it downloads, it will be labeled memtest86+2.11.iso.zip
Unzip the file once you download it. You should have a .iso file in the unzipped directory. It will look like a zip file in some cases but the file name will now be memtest86+2.11.iso

if you don't have a burning program that will burn .ISO files get burncdcc in my signature below.

NOTE...do not put a blank cd in until burncdcc opens the tray for you
1. Start BurnCDCC
2. Browse to the ISO file you want to burn on cd/dvd ....in this case its memtest86.iso
3. Select the ISO file
4. click on Start

Make sure the bios is set for the cd drive as the first boot device
Put the cd in the cd drive and then boot your computer.

Running the Diagnostic Program:

The basic diagnostic screen has five main sections of relevant information. Three at the top which are labeled, PASS %, TEST %, and TEST #. This will basically show you the total progress of the current test, the overall progress of the diagnostic test, and the test number is currently performing.

On the middle left hand side of the of the program interface there is a “Wall Time” section that will keep track of how long the diagnostic test has been running for. This just gives you an idea if you are not attending the testing process.

The main section to look for is the lower half of the screen which is usually blank. As long as the memory testing is going ok with no errors this section of the screen should remain blank. If the diagnostic program finds any serious faults in the memory you will see it display a memory dump of address’s in this section. This is similar to what is displayed on your screen when you encounter a blue screen of death.

You now have most everything you need to know about setting up and testing your memory with diagnostic programs. This guide should help you get to the source of any intermittent problems related to your memory.


Run memtest for at least 2 hours
If it starts showing any errors during that time then you will have to replace the memory
If there are no errors after 2 hours press Esc and that will end the tests
We will then try other options

I'm not sure if this will work but if you haven't gotten to the last post I made you can try this.
There should be a recovery partition on your hd.
To get to it when the system boots up and gets to the splash screen try tapping on F11 to get to it. Let me know if this works or if you have already begun the memtest. If memtest is running please allow it to run for the 2 hours minimum as requested.
