You all really seem to know your stuff and I could use some help. My system is a mess and it looks like I have a number of worms and/or trojans. I renewed my Norton subscription, ran a system scan and found nothing. I've done Ad Aware, Spybot, Shredder, Cleaner--everything. Tell me what I'm missing. Here's the log and thank you very much:

Lets get this party started.

Please print out these instructions to make it easy to follow and to have access to them when you have to reboot your pc. Please read through them prior to commencing to do anything and if there is anything that you are unsure of, or do not understand, please contact me first for assistance.

I would like you to carry out the following free on-line virus scan and follow their instructions on removal of anything that it may find.

Panda Active Scan

Open up HJT and rescan and Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake. Some of them might not be there as they may have been removed in previous stages of the sequence. This is normal so do not be alarmed

Ensure no windows are open apart from HJT and click FIX CHECKED.

Download the following program.

Cleanup

Reboot into SAFE MODE by tapping the F8 key whilst PC starts up.

Now use the Cleanup program to clear out temp files, junk etc.

Reboot normally and rescan with HJT and post the log in this thread

Thank you so much for your help. I ran Panda and it came up with just one small, non-malicious item. I want to go ahead with the rest of your plan but am worried that, should a problem arise, I don't have an XP disc. My XP OS came pre-installed OEM and all I have is the recovery discs I made. Do I need to worry or should I just proceed? Thanks again.

Hi seamus,

You have nothing to worry about, however if you leave the following entry and do not check it in HJT, we will be 100% safe. (it should just regenerate from cache anyway)

OK, so far so good. Cleanup took hours to finish up and no trojans found. Computer is now slower than ever to boot up and shut down. Here's the latest HJT log and thank you very much for your help.

Hi seamus,

You have 1 optional remove in HJT.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE <------ This is a known resource hog . All componants of Office are available from Start/programs

If you decide to remove, scan with HJT, check the entry, ensure no windows open except HJT and click FIX CHECKED. Then exit HJT.

Please download the following free 14 day trial of Ewido.

Ewido

Install it and then double click on the new icon for the program. You can't miss it, it's a big yellow E. It will ask you to upgrade the database. Follow the instructions.


Once upgraded, close the program.

Now reboot into Safe Mode again. Restart Ewido, click on the Scanner button, Select drives if you have more than one and then start.


This may take some time to scan. Once the first problem is detected ensure you tick the box for all (bottom left) and allow it to continue.

At the end of the scan, it may ask if you would like to delete anything found in archive or zipped files, OK that request, then click on save report. SAVE to the default location, it will then generate a text file. Copy that to post in this thread.

Carry out another HJT scan and post the log back here, so we can sort out any remnants

Wow, thanks again. I'm having trouble starting in Safe Mode, though. Pressing F8 would not do it. How else can I do it? Is it absolutely necessary to be in Safe Mode will performing these actions?

To use the System Configuration Utility method to boot into SAFE MODE.

Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
The computer restarts in Safe mode.
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

Hi Seamus,

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
