Sluggish Gameplay

I have a Dell Dimension 3000. I had to reformat my computer about 2 months ago. I had a Nvidia Geforce 5500 video card with 1256 Ram. My computer used to play Everquest without any delay or lag. After reformatting and downloading all of the Windows service pack updates it takes forever for the game to load and it is very sluggish. I now have 2 gigs of ram and I bought an Nvidia Gforce 8400 GS and the computer is still sluggish. What can i do to fix this?
