if you power on your pc then leave it alone, which operating system do you boot into ?

if you boot into ubuntu can you open a terminal and copy and paste this, then press enter

sudo fdisk -l

then copy the output and paste it in your next reply

if its xp then i'll try to guide you

yea it boots into xp but if i use ubuntu i have to remove the other wires for the xp hard drive lol sorry i think i forgot to mention that but if both hard drives are hooked up then yes it will boot into xp instead of the ubuntu drive and i do not see any options on startup except the bios i dont think tis would be much help if they are not both hooked up but just in case here it is sorry im still learning

right its easy, but if you get stuck then let me know,

find your ubuntu hdd and locate the jumper at the back, set it to master,
on your windows hdd set it to slave,

locate the ubuntu hdd at the end of the ide cable and locate the windows one in the middle

enter your bios and select the ubuntu hdd as first hdd

boot your pc normaly, you should be in ubuntu

now for the tricky bit :) - be careful doing this

/boot/grub/menu.lst (as in list not first) needs editing to show the windows hdd and allow you to dual boot

enter this in a terminal

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

and copy and paste this at the end of the list

title Windoze
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

then save and exit

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(this is part of mine to show you roughly how it should look, i use a different version of linux so the entries are worded different)

timeout 10
color black/cyan yellow/cyan
gfxmenu (hd0,0)/boot/gfxmenu

here are 2 pictures, one is of where the jumper is on the hdd, the other is a settings diagram which should be on the top of the hdd,
let me know if you have any problems

no problem, glad i could be of service,

you may also want to access your windows files from linux or your linux files from windows,

you can also make your windows boot first, if you wished,

any questions then just ask,

safe surfing
