When I checked for updates, it showed that an important update for window vista (KB937287) was available but I couldn't install it with an error code 8007007B. I tried to like into the web for solutions but couldn't find any. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi -

0x8007007b = ERROR_INVALID_FILENAME 123 (0x7b)

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

It appears to be a file or folder name problem.
Check your Windows Update log - c:\windows\windowsupdates.log

Try the app delinvfile - if it is an invalid file name, this program should find it -
http://www.purgeie.com/delinv/

Have you tried to manually download the file (from here: http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en ) and install it that way?

I had tried to manually download and install the update as u asked. In the end, it shows me that "the following updates were not installed: Update for Windows (KB937287)". I am very worry as I know that this update is an essential prerequisite for later updates.

As jcgriff2 has stated previously, please check your Windows Update logfile ( c:\windows\windowsupdates.log )
Post the results here for us to have a look at.

Look at the log and mark where it ends right now (and save it).
Then try Windows Update again (to get the error message)
Once you get the error message, copy out the part that's new and paste it here.

I'd suspect that this is a permissions/ownership issue of the folder that the updates are downloaded to. But cannot figure out where the folders are.

Try running Process Monitor (free here: http://www.microsoft...essmonitor.mspx ) and scanning that log for errors accessing files when you're running Windows Update.

Be aware that the logfile from this program can take all of your hard drive space if left running. Be sure to start the program only when you're ready to check Windows Updates - and be sure to stop it from logging as soon as you receive the error message from Windows Update. The logfile is usually huge, but you can save some time by scanning for key words in the error messages.

Post the lines from the logfile so that we can have a look at it.
Also post the Windows Update logfile that was generated at the same time - that way we can compare the times to see where the errors are occurring.

From that we may be able to isolate the problem. I'm currently reading about the previous utilities that did this (Filemon and Regmon) and am still a bit confused over the significance of the filters that are available.

It's hard to post the log file of process monitor as it keeps on generating new log every second. I can't identify which one belongs to window update and the logfile is way too long for me to post all of it. What should I do?

First, turn the logging off. Now that you've captured the event the logging function isn't necessary (and eventually it'll fill up your hard drive)

Then, open the Windows Update logfile and find the time that Windows Update was running and failed.
Using that time, open up the Process Monitor log file and copy the stuff from the same time frame.

Post both sections of the logfiles (Windows Update and Process Monitor) for us to have a look at.
