Hi there,
I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop running Windows Vista. Just recently it started to freeze after I try to start it up after being in sleep mode. When it wakes up it will either show the logon screen and I won't be able to do anything or it will show a black screen with just the mouse pointer on it (but I can't move the mouse pointer). it just started happening a couple weeks ago and I'm getting sick of having to hold the power button down and restart the whole computer! Like I said in the "topic title" it only does it sometimes. It seems to happen more often when I try to manually put it into sleep mode by using the Start Menu button, rather than when I simply close my laptop.
Thanks for any help!

Sounds like a video card corruption. The clues I got from what you said is the black screen, and the "won't wake from sleep."

I will not recommend to replace the video card yet, because we can try something.

Right click on your battery icon in the right hand corner of your screen and click Power Options. Look through the list of advanced settings, find hybrid sleep mode -- and disable it.

Please let me know of the results.

Hi there,
I tried disabling the hybrid sleep option (it originally wasn't listed as an option, but I guess there is a fix for that which I ran...it was related to Disk Cleanup deleting a necessary file). Still having the same issue.
The screen isn't necessarily black all the time when it "wakes" up from sleep mode. Sometimes the login screen will appear (shows the user and a picture that the user has chosen), but freeze. When it doesn't wake up from sleep mode it's about 50/50 whether the screen just stays black or whether the logon screen appears and freezes. It will also still fully wake up from sleep about 50% of the time!
I hope it's not in need of repair! Any other help you could suggest would be great!

Try System File Checker

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Command Prompt.

Type in
sfc /scannow

Make sure there is a space in between the sfc and the /scannow.

Allow it to run, it should finish and then disappear.
