Hello,

My computer had a single SATA disk (drive C) with Windows XP SP3. I have installed a second, IDE disk from an old computer hoping to rescue some data from it. When Windows started, the SATA disk appeared as drive E, and the IDE disk as drive C. Windows started from drive E but loaded some of the files from C as can be seen in the OTListIt logfile included below. The IDE disk was a boot drive in the old computer (WinXP+SP3), so it also had the system files in the WINDOWS\ directory.

Now if I remove the second drive, an attempt to boot results in an infinite logging-on / logging-off loop. The same loop occurs if I swap the drive letters as described in this MS KB article: (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223188). I have also re-created the userinit.exe file from userinit.ex_ as was suggested in one of the postings, but this did not change anything.

I still can boot with both drives installed, but many programs fail to start, and the system hangs every few minutes.

I will appreciate any help with this.

Thank you.

Alex

make sure the IDE PATA HD is as a slave(not need in SATA drive case) before that named the SATA Drive like test, system drive etc.....then attach the old HD......I suppose old HD doesn't have OS, if so then u can used live CD.

Hi Baula,

Thank you for your reply.

The IDE disk is configured as slave. I renamed drive E (SATA) to System Disk, but this did not help. The IDE disk does have an operating system on it (Windows XP-SP3), but the system is damaged.

Just to be clear, my goal is to remove the IDE disk and still be able to boot from the SATA disk as before.

I disconnected the IDE, and the boot failed. Then I booted with both disks and checked the event log. There was a message repeated 16 times:

DCOM got error "The system cannot find the path specified. " attempting to start the service EventSystem with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF}

The GUID (same in all messages) is listed in the Registry as EventSystemTier2.

Problem solved by editing the paths in the Registry.
