Dan, I fixed it!! The files that sfc/scannow couldn't fix were related to Norton 360 that came installed on this computer. I downloaded a copy of the Norton removal tool, and ran that, I also had a friend download a copy of the service pack 2 for vista, (yes it was released May 26) installed it, rebooted (several times) and I am writing this to you from the problematic puter. Thank you sir for your time and efforts.
