Can't complete step 3 - Windows updates, ie won't connect

I have followed the steps for malware removal up to step 3 but I cannot download windows updates, my ie won't stay open. That's the reason I'm on this site in the first place. I have Firefox but updates won't work with that browser. What should I do now?

Thanks for any help you can give.
