I am at a loss to know what to do!

I have a red circle with a white cross as an icon on my toolbar without a discriptor. When I right click IE opens a web page for www.newgenlook.com. IE will open at any given moment at will. I get all sort of pornographic pages and various "pharmaceutical" offerings.

I have tried to remove this spyware with SpyDoctor, Ad-Aware, Stinger, Norton, Xoft etc all without success.

I have trawled various web forums but as a novice user find the solutions a bit complicated and it would apear not very relevant to my particular problem.

I have a log file of HijackThis which I think could help some kind person out there assist me with this problem. Please help as the pop-ups are driving me mad.

I am sure Jenna Jameson is a very nice person but I don't really want to see THAT much of her THAT often!!

The log is as follows:

Welcome to GTG.

Did you put these in your hosts file?

O1 - Hosts: 200.3.0.64 ylrs620
O1 - Hosts: 200.3.0.211 younl586

If not, I want you to include them in the fixes with HijackThis.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Don't run it yet.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.newgenlook.info/ad/ad0058/

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\systr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\system32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\guninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\popup_bl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SEARCHDLL.DLL

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Thanks for the quick response.

What is a "hosts file"? and how do I put things in it?

I did say I was a novice!

Fix it then. I assume you have no idea what it's for, so it's probably bad.

I missed another one. You really should not be posting in this section. For spyware/malware problems, you should be posting in the Malware Forums instead. Since we are here already, let's finish it up.

Just follow the instructions I posted, but include those two host entries to fix in HijackThis (since you don't know what they are for).

I've asked around and the hosts are the networks I am connected through, so I guess I need to leave them in.

Were you able to delete these files?

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\systr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\system32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\guninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\popup_bl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SEARCHDLL.DLL

Try using KillBox and delete them again. Then check and fix that newgenlook entry in HijackThis.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/Cleanup.exe ) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Restart and post a new HijackThis log.

I have a similiar problem. This is my work arround.

use 'find' to find where in your computer the web site is located, the second line lets you search for a group of letters.

delete every program that has the website name in it. It is probably in user.dat which is a non-removable non-editable windows registry file.

In internet explorer when the crud site appears go to "Tools"; "Intrenet Options"; "security tab"; "restricted sites" ; "sites"; "add this website" then type in the name ( it will help you ) then hit the "ok" button. There are probably only 20 sites youll need to banish

The System32 files all deleted ok.

I deleted a dozen or so icon files from System32 as well.

The red circle with white cross icon has gone.

The newgenlook link has gone off the HijackThis Log File.

I reset the default website and now don't get (hopefully!) the newgenlook site starting automatically.

I ran Cleanup.

Here is the HijackThis logfile:
