Hi guys,

I'm really hoping you can help - and think you will be able to. I have a sony vaio laptop- bought around 2006.

At present i am completely unable to boot the laptop. It trys to start windows and then the BSOD appears with error message "There is a fatal error 0000402 (0000000 x 0000000)"

I have tried to enter the BIOS screen during the boot process. Occassionally i can get the BIOS to appear, but it is completely unresponsive. The time ticks but it won't respond to any keys.

The problem first started a week ago. then i was able to boot it, but only after about 8 attempts. When i did boot it would tell me that new hardware was found and site the ACPI uniprocessor.

Can anyone advise as to how i might fix the problem.

I'm assuming that since the BIOS is not working it is probably a hardware fault rather than a OS fault.

Also - and yes i know i'm a fool - i haven't backed up files, so if there's a suggestion that doesn't mean loss of files i would like it even more!

Many many thanks

Alexandra
