there is no servicepackfiles directory as far as i can see. of course this is not real full ms-dos mode we are working with.

Run this: msconfig
Then click on "Launch System Restore"

i do not know how long this will take. the machine seems to have found an april 13 point that it thinks it can restore to.

i'll let you know what if anything this does.

er, was april 13 after or before that conflictor virus happened? just curious. wondering if that may be what got him.

c:\windows\explorer.exe not there

after the restore, it only came up the way it has been since he brought it to me. nothing but wall paper and the ability to run task magager. so i guess it has been this way since before april 13.

system restore would not find a checkpoint before that.

ok assuming you have one (if not use a floppy or buy a jump drive) download this file http://www.savefile.com/files/2108049 unzip it, put it into the storage device, put it into the computer were fixing, go into safemode with command prompt, then type in (a-z):\explorer.exe

you should see your icons back, keep command prompt up, then copy and paste the file thats in the jump drive into c:\windows, then reboot into normal mode and see if its fixed.

i am leaveing until wed. night in about an hour. but will check as soon as i get back if jump drive and flash drive are the same. also if 2 gig is enough or still need 8 gig.

The files only 1 mb, so about anything is good and yea you can use either a jump drive or a flash drive.

and there the same thing, just different file sizes

Ok.
Wait for that, then we can try some things, like replacing your explorer.exe file (like Tyler said) or backing up your data, and using a recovery partition to restore your computer,
