Hi, I just purchased a Macbook off of Ebay, and I am trying to update the software. It says I need a username and password. I did not recieve any disks with the computer. Is there a way to reset this or something? I don't have a clue about Macs. I had purchased an IBM before without disk and it was fine. I don't know how to create restore disks with this either. Thanks for the help.

the proper method is to contact the seller and see if you can get the disks for the computer. If you can not, then you should be able to contact apple to obtain the proper cd's. In any case, you should not be trying to use the existing computer without restoring it factor settings. That way you don't have to deal with other users software, data, or issues.

When you request replacement system restore disks (which Apple calls Fulfillment Disks) the first thing they ask you for is the serial number for the Mac you want the disks for. That is so that they provide the duplicate disks that were shipped with the particular machine originally- and if it shipped with Tiger, then Tiger you will get.

I have done this with a couple of Macs I have helped people sell on eBay where the owners lost the restore disks and in each case the average cost of a pair of replacement restore disks was $32 shipped- and they arrived within 5 or 6 days.
