Have the Nail.exe on my hard drive, using XP pro have tried several Anti virus scans, but it refuses to move.

You are running HijackThis from Temporary Files; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Install Ewido Security Suite (it is a 14-day trial version of the programme).

• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The programme will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The programme will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the programme scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen.

Please download the following programme. Save it to the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit

Your result is not what I was expecting. Would you please re-run Ewido ensuring that you update prior to running it. Again I would be grateful to see the report it generates.

You are still running HijackThis from a temporary folder; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this. Temp folders get cleaned out and all back up will then be lost. This is purely a safety routine.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the box next to all the entry listed below.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you receive a message and your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

OK done what you asked, but when I reboot I get a window up stating Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

tried doing all that you suggest again but still get the same window up on restart!!

Let’s try this. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Please post the contents of that log in your reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hello again Adrian

I am obliged to inform you that you are running HijackThis from a Temporary Folder; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

I can only assume that you have two instances of the programme on your PC. It keeps showing up being run from My Documents\Temp, but I can't argue against facts so I'll just keep ignoring it.

Please print these instructions before you start for reference throughout the fix, some of which is in safe mode, where you will not have access to the instructions or the internet.

This Nail.exe infection is proving to be difficult to remove. I want to try Ewido again with a new twist.

Please open Ewido and update it only.

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

It gets worse! My PC wont start in "safe" mode. All i get is a screen full of:

Multidisk partition1\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc


It doesn't go any further and i have to switch it off and start again.

I don't mind the degree of difficulty; it's all a learning curve to me. There's more than one way to skin a cat as the old adage goes.

Let's see if we can get you into safe mode another way.

Windows XP

If Windows XP is the only operating system installed on your computer, booting into Safe Mode with these instructions.

* If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
* Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
* Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
* Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
* Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
* When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.

To use the System Configuration Utility method

* Close all open programs.
* Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
* The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
* The computer restarts in Safe mode.
* Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

Windows as part of a multiboot system

Use this method ONLY if you have multiple operating systems installed on your computer.

* If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
* Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
* When the Boot loader menu (list of the available operating systems) appears, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select the version Windows what you want
* Press Enter, and then immediately begin tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
* Scroll to and select the Safe mode menu item, and then press Enter.

Then just run the last fix. Bet you're glad you've got a weekend to do this!

Hi

Its not getting any better!

Tried what you suggested and and went into msconfig.

I now am not able to reboot the pc at all.
It wont boot in safe mode or normal mode, so i cant get back into mscofig to uncheck boot in safe mode.

I am now operating from another pc.

please help
