I have Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1 and all the latest updates.

I know there is a setting to turn thumbnails view off in Explorer. But is there any way to turn it off in all folders EXCEPT those that contains pictures or videos?

Or perhaps is there a third-party program that will accomplish this?

thank you,
mike.

Most likely. Let's try this out:

Control Panel > System > Click Advanced System Settings > (Under Performance) Click Settings.

Make sure these are checked:
Use a background image for each folder type

Uncheck:
Use thumbnails instead of icons

Right click on the taskbar and click Properties.
Disable the following (make sure it is unchecked): Show Window Previews (thumbnails)
