I recently purchased a used 280GB hard drive. I tried to format at format failed.How do I proceed.

Well that depends. you say windows xp but which version and more importantly what service pack are you running. Also are you sure your computer supports such a large hard drive? also how did you format and what or how did it fail.. how do you have it connected... is it sata or pata.... in other words we need more info...
