using 'Tools -> Folder Options -> Show hidden files and folders' has no effect
the setting reverts to original immediately

read around and concluded that it would be a malware problem (and hence am not sure am posting in the right area). hence ran a system scan with avira antivir and quaratined all detections (which again i dont know to be advisable...have attached the log)
no effect on the problem
at the end of my tether
