I did a repair on XP becaues I lost all SVCHOST services. The repair worked but my OEM cd has SP1 on it. I downloaded and insatlled 55 updates which included SP2. All updates installed ok with the exception of the SP2. It gets to where it is "running processes before installing" and stops.

With SP1 installed I have internet access even though Network Connections says I am DISCONNECTED (if I try to connect I get a 678 error - "remote computer did not respond"), no control panel as links, only menu and I can not start the MS firewall.

I installed SP3 and it installed ok. I have Control Panel as links or menu. I have the MS firewall. I have email and virus definations update capability. But I can not browse the internet with any browser and Network Connection says I am DISCONNECTED.

I would like to either get internet access with SP3 installed and everything working or get back to SP2 with everything workin

Right now I booted with Ubuntu Live and as you can see I can browse the internet.

Any ideas on what I can do to correct this mess?

Go to Start -> Run -> cmd
Type in:
ipconfig /all > C:\results.txt
Now go to your C: drive and open up "results.txt"
Post the contents of that in your next reply.

Also give me and Everest Report. Click on "Everest Instructions" in my sig, and follow the instructions.
Also give me your computer model and make.

Sorry it took so long to get back. Like I said in my initial post I was using Ubuntu Live (GNU/Linux OS) in order to have access to the internet with my browser (FireFox & IE6). I had no way to copy the logs in XP and paste in the Ubunto FireFox browser so I did another repair. I am back with SP1 and have access to the internet with my browsers again. I still can not install SP2 and in Network Connections my Broadband conection says it's DISCONNECTED - but as you see I am here?????

OH yeah Logs....

So now you are completely connected, but your network shows up as "Disconnected"; am I right?

Go here: http://www.ecs.com.t...s...D=6&LanID=0
Download the first driver.
This doesn't have to do with your network problem, but it is good to keep this driver updated.

Go here: http://download.cnet...2_4-119427.html
Download and install the driver. Also try to get me a screenshot of your Network Connections.

I have always been connected but with SP3 installed I can not use FireFox, IE6, Mozilla or Google Chrome to browse. With SP1 installed it's as good as I can get. Now if I could just install SP2 and figure out why the Network Connection says I am DISCONNECTED I would be happy. I'll try your other ideas right now. Thanks for the help edge2022.

WOW! I never thought to update the mother board - ever! I'm not even sure what the other driver is for.... but it's going in.

OK. I ran both driver updates. I guess they did what they are suppose to do. I got no confirmation on either one. How do you know if they changed anything?

How do I attach a screen capture? I think I got it.... :) I hope that is what you meant.
NetworkConnect.gif

I was reading some of the post and one caught my eye. The poster says he can not connect after installing IE8. I had IE8 installed before I did my FIRST repair. Of course the repair gave me back IE6. Think there might be a connection (no pun intended) there?

How about we try to setup a network.
Go to Control Panel and then click on Network and Internet Connections.
Then click on Network Setup Wizard.
Go through the wizard with your current configuration, and turn on printer and file sharing. Once completed, reboot.

OK edge2022 I'll try that Saturday. Let me tell you what has transpired since I was last on. I had a successful instllation of SP2. I disabled FIXCCS.EXE and the install completed. In case you forgot what FIXCCS is, it is an instllation file that is extracted from the SP2 file you can download. That's the good news --- the bad is I do not have access to the internet with any browser. I booted using Ubuntu Live CD. It seems the only time I have everything, browser, email ect... is when I have SP1 installed. The DISCONNECT problem seems small now compared to not being able to have SP2 or SP3.

I tried to go on line with IE and it said to run the Network Diagnostic program. It came up saying the WINSOCK may have been corrupted and it set it back to default settings. I rebooted but nothing changed.

I'll build a new connection this afternoon - but I have tried that before and it did not work. But who knows....

All right then.
We can try fixing Winsock: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm
http://www.snapfiles...nsockxpfix.html
While using these tools, make sure that you create a system restore point and a backup of your registry if it prompts you.

Also make sure that your DNS Server is responding properly by following this guide: http://www.windowsne...Resolution.html

Are you on SP2, or SP3 right now?

I have SP2 installed. Not sure how I am going to fix the winsock if I can not access the internet with a browser. I am using Ubunto Live to access this forum. I can not download anything and have it when I boot to XP - right?

I tried to set up another connection - this is what I did:
Started the New Connection Wizard
Selected - Connect to Internet
Selected - Set up my connection manually
Selected - Connect using a broadband connection that is always on
Message came back and said - Your broadband connection should be configured and ready to use.
I opened "learn more about broadband" and followed the instructions a ran "repair this connection". When it was done I still have DISCONNECTED under broadband connections. Under LAN or High Speed Internet connections it says CONNECTED (nor enabled as in my screen capture I posted above). Which one should I be looking at, Broadband or LAN & High Speed Internet? What is the difference?

I'm getting ready to do another repair so I can go back to SP1 and at least browse the internet. I'm going to visit the links you posted and also write them down so if I do the reapir I can visit the links again under XP. I'll edit this post before I leave Ubuntu.

OK edge2022 I wrote some stuff down and I am going back to XP and try them out. If I end up doing a reapir to go back to SP1 so I can access the internet sites I will download those fix it tools. I wonder if I can just uninstall SP2 and then install SP1? Wish I could wait around for the answer must I am anxious to try what you suggested in your post.

Tried all the ideas and nothing changed. I uninstalled SP2. I am back with SP1. I have full internet access with everything. My connections still state DISCONNECTED.
I am still looking for a way to install either SP2 or 3 and keep full access to the internet. I downloaded the WinSockXPfix program and I may try to install SP2 again and then run the fix program.

The Local Area Connection and the 1394 connection should both be enabled when connecting through a wire.

You can download and save a file to your hard disk using Ubuntu Live. Just mount your drive, and download the winsock program to it.

Try deleting the "Copy of SBC DSL Connection"

I found 2 SP2 fixes on a Microsoft site == WindowsXP-KB885894_SP2installFIX and WindowsXP-KB884020-x86-enu. I tried them both but I saw no changes. I am still as I stated in my last post. Would it hurt to run the WinSockXPfix program with what I have now or should I install SP2 again and then run it?

How do you "mount" a drive?

Click on "Backup Files Without Windows" in my sig, and scroll to the bottom. You should find step by step instructions for mounting a drive manually. Make sure you know how to do this before installing SP3.

If you run WinsockFix if a problem is not present, you risk messing up your internet completely. I suggest you update to SP3 now, so that we can troubleshoot at that level. Also make sure that you have all the Windows Updates.
If you want to try WinsockFix in SP1, then backup your registry first. Click on "Backing Up the Registry Using ERUNT" in my sig, and follow the instructions.
