I bought an used Dell (Windows 2000 Professional) from work, and I'm unable to connect it to the internet using my wireless USB (Netgear WG111v2). I'm currently using the wireless USB with a laptop, so I know it is not the USB causing the problem.

After reading a few of the other posts, I did try following SpaceCowboy's instructions, but couldn't get very far as the only connection available on my computer is the LAN connection. I did a connectivity test, and here are the results below...

Have you installed any software on your computer to manage wireless networks? Windows 2000 doesn't come with any, so you'll need to use the one supplied by your adapters manufacturer.

If you still have the original documentation from the USB adapter, try to follow those steps exactly for setting up the device.

Follow the instructions by rshaffer61 HERE and post the report here.

Do you have the wireless adapter currently plugged into the laptop? If so, have you installed the driver from the disk that was supplied with the adapter?

The report says that you're running Windows XP Professional. Did you upgrade the Operating System, or is it possible that you're actually running Windows XP, Instead of 2000?

To make sure of you're Operating System version, right-click on My Computer and from the pop-up menu, choose Properties. The System Properties box should open and it will tell you which Version of Windows you are running.

The wireless adapter is hooked up to the laptop right now. Yes, I installed the driver on the laptop and it's working just fine. That's why I assumed it should be the same for the desktop.

My apologies... I forgot to mention that I did upgrade to windows xp professional hoping that it'd somehow fix the internet connection. It's Windows XP Professional version 2002 with Service Pack 3.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connection (You might have to Switch to Classic View to see Network Connections)

When the Network Connections window opens, do you see your wireless device in there?

If you do, are you able to see your wireless network with the Netgear utility?

No, I don't see my wireless network there. I just uninstalled the driver and utility and reinstalled it to see if it'd show up. It's there now, and under the type section, it says LAN or High Speed Internet, and the Status says Not connected, Firewalled.

My wireless network shows up in the screen when I ask to search for a wireless network, but after entering the WEP key, nothing happens. I turned off the firewall and tried connecting again with the same results. There's no error message or any notification that pops up.

Which utility are you using to connect to your wireless network? I would recommend using the Windows XP Wireless Utility as the ones that are supplied from the adapters Manufacturers usually require a bit of configuration, while the built in XP Utility is pretty much automatic.

If you have the Netgear utility installed, uninstall it and use XP's Wireless Utility to connect to your network and let me know what happens.

I'm connected now! :)

I was initially using the Windows XP utility, and it wasn't working. After reading your comment about utilities being supplied by the adapter manufacturer, I decided to check on the Netgear website to look for any driver updates, and found one. Once I downloaded it and restarted the computer, it worked beautifully.

xtthew!, thanks so much for your help and guidance! :)
