This is strange, but it looks like you can access recovery partition only from within Windows, or using recovery CD.
Since you can access Safe Mode, read here: http://h10025.www1.h...;product=500508
Reinstalling the operation system

Well that's the dumbest thing yet. But at least now I know why I've been so lost with this computer and have done system recoverys with ease on others in the past.

I'll try following those steps now

In the link you sent it has a section "Reformatting the hard drive" and it gives instructions that don't work since I can't open any programs, not even system recovery, on my computer. And the only recovery disk i have is "application and driver recovery DVD"

Thank you for your help! It seems I'm screwed without a recovery disk since I can't even do the system recovery in safe mode. Stupid MALWARE!!!

Unfortunately, I see no other way, but ordering those disks...
From my experience with HP, they should send them to you, either free, or at shipping costs.

Yeah I'll go ahead and see if I can get those disks.
In the mean time I just went out and bought new laptop...the compaq was clearly old and I was just waiting for an excuse to get a new one :) . Now I have an Asus, so far so good, it rocks. Bad part is that it has Vista...which is already driving me nuts, but I'll get use to it.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Congratulations! :)
Trust me, you'll like Vista, when you'll get used to it in a couple of weeks.
I actually rarely fire up my XP computer. Feels like little bit ancient OS - 8 years an counting..
