I have one question. When you have 1 RAM stick inside your computer, does it matter which stick of the 2 you insert? Ex. Does the old Ultra work fine alone but the new Ultra causes problems when used alone?

No, as far as I've noticed it does not matter which RAM stick or which slot is used but I can double check. And just 1 RAM stick can still have problems just not as much. For example, I was rebooted a couple of times without a BSOD in the process of getting to the Everest Report. Maybe too many windows open at the same time, 4 or 5, so I could see instructions, download window, author's website, Windows Explorer and I think the program window.

Some of the BSOD error codes I gave you, I will give you more as I get them. I will post the Prime95 results when it completes. But here is the Everest report posted from the affected computer.

First of all you need to make some updates to your computer.
Download and install the latest chipset drivers from here: http://www.viaarena....I...&CatID=1070
It's this one: VIA Hyperion Pro Driver Package

Then update your IDE controller drivers from here:http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1180&SubCatID=115

Update video card drivers from here: http://support.amd.c...prer300-xp.aspx

Also run Windows Update and update to SP3 and get the latest hotfixes.

Can you download SpeedFan from here: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
Install and run Speedfan, and post the voltages on the bottom and the temps on the right.

Update DirectX from here: http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en
Also get back to me with the BSOD error codes.

Enable DMA transfer mode: http://www.cdrlabs.c...ures-t7625.html

Hi,
Normally, when I'm not having major system problems, if I had formated my c partition for whatever reason, after a clean Windows install, I would have absolutely updated the software by now. But this time everything has been so unstable and I've reformatted and reinstalled Windows so many times that I haven't updated or installed anything other than Windows and whatever was necessary to test, provide test results and help resolve the problem.

For one thing, at first I wasn't able to install anything else because of the rebooting and later I wasn't sure the system could handle any other installs until the problem was resolved and I thought if that was the case then I might be back at the beginning again if I tried to install anything else. Plus I didn't think the drivers would help resolve the problem. Also I still don't have what I would consider a clean Windows install, once the problem is found and/or resolved I was planning on reformatting and reinstalling Windows one last time to get a clean install. So I figured why put a lot of stuff in there that I'm just going to have to redo again in a few days or weeks.

This computer actually went the longest without me reformatting the c drive, I've done this several times on several different computers, to the point that I have a certain install order, Windows, motherboard drivers, other hardware drivers, Windows update and certain other software that I install in a particular order. This is the first time I've had a problem but if you think that updating the drivers will help to find and/or resolve the problem then I will install them. And I will post Prime95 test results and more BSOD error codes when I have them. Thank you.
:)

I see your point, but the drivers may help. The BSOD error code along with the minidumps should help me determine what is causing the problem. Anyways, you don't need to update to SP3 or install the latest DirectX, just try the IDE, video, and chipset drivers and enable DMA transfer mode (This is important).
Thank you very much for still working on this problem; this is something I look forward to fixing. :)

Hi,
Ok, I will install those drivers.

Thank you very much for still working on this problem; this is something I look forward to fixing.

You're welcome. You're really patient with these mystery problems, I'm not, I prefer when something just outright dies so I know where the problem is and can just replace it and move on.

Prime95 test results:
[Main thread Jun 23 07:03] Mersenne number primality test program version 25.9
[Main thread Jun 23 07:04] Starting worker.
[Main thread Jun 24 18:53] Stopping all worker threads.
[Main thread Jun 24 18:53] Execution halted.

[Jun 24 18:53] Self-test 1024K passed!
[Jun 24 18:53] Test 1, 5300 Lucas-Lehmer iterations of M14942209 using FFT length 896K.
[Jun 24 18:53] Torture Test completed 704 tests in 35 hours, 49 minutes - 0 errors, 0 warnings.
[Jun 24 18:53] Worker stopped.

Ok.
You should have:
1. Downloaded and installed the drivers I asked you to.
2. Enabled DMA Transfer Mode
Now do the following:
1. Tell me the BSOD error codes that pop up
2. Attach the corresponding minidump files

3. Can you download SpeedFan from here: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
Install and run Speedfan, and post the voltages on the bottom and the temps on the right.

4. Stress your graphics card using Aquamark. Download it here: http://downloads.gur...oad.php?det=673
Install and run it. Click on Select Measurement and choose one. Then let the benchmark load and start. This test will be very stressful on older cards, so if the test doesn't complete in an hour, quit Aquamark. What you will be looking for is a BSOD.

Download and install the latest chipset drivers from here: http://www.viaarena....I...&CatID=1070

Done.

Then update your IDE controller drivers from here:http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1180&SubCatID=115

This web page does not load.

Update video card drivers from here: http://support.amd.c...prer300-xp.aspx

I don't think it fully installed because it said I needed .NET Framework v2.0. Then the ATI Catalyst Control Center stopped, didn't move anymore and the install window didn't go away when I clicked cancel. Now when Windows loads the screen comes in 2 or 3 waves, then full normal, then blanks for 2 or 3 seconds, then full normal. But when I installed Aquamark it didn't do the wave thing or the blanking thing anymore. And I still don't have tabs in the display properties.

This installed but would not run because it said I needed DirectX9. So I activated Windows (it locked up once so I had to try again), went through the validation and downloaded DirectX9 from your link. Then when I tried to install it would not run because it said "An internal system error occurred. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine problem." and an OK button. Here is the DXError.log below.

Can you download SpeedFan from here: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
Install and run Speedfan, and post the voltages on the bottom and the temps on the right.

Vcc 5V: 0.63V / Vsb 3.3V: 0.00V

Enable DMA transfer mode: http://www.cdrlabs.c...ures-t7625.html

This was already enabled on all drives.

Now do the following:
1. Tell me the BSOD error codes that pop up
2. Attach the corresponding minidump files

I will do that next now that I've done what I could do with the downloads and installs. I'm trying to do a bunch of 1 RAM stick stuff at the same time, then do 2 RAM stick stuff at the same time so that way I'm not disconnecting cables from the computer and putting RAM in or taking RAM out every 5 minutes. But remember the BSOD wasn't creating the mini dump files so the only error codes I would be able to give you are the ones that are actually on the BSOD, like I gave you before.

Just the error codes will do.

Go here: http://www.viaarena....mp;SubCatID=115
That link works for me; update the IDE controller drivers.

Download the .NET Framework 2.0 here: http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en
This is essential. Then install the video card drivers again.

As for DirectX, just update to SP2. And then run Aquamark... you are looking for BSODs.

Can you post a screenshot of Speedfan... something appears to be going on.

I downloaded it but it needed something else to install so I went on to the Windows update.

I did the Windows Express update and after it installed SP2 it rebooted and I am no longer able to boot into Windows. In Normal Mode I get locked up at the logo screen. I tried to boot in Safe Mode and with 1 RAM stick in I got a BSOD. And here is the error code:

"DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Technical information:

Run a repair installation... right now I am assuming that there is no important info on the bad computer. Windows just doesn't seem to want to work with your computer. Can you boot into Last Known Good Configuration?

Need a screenshot of Speedfan, and after the repair installation, don't install anything else (this is my mistake)

Run a repair installation... right now I am assuming that there is no important info on the bad computer.

How do I run a repair installation, just reinstall over what's already there? Yes, there are still important files on one of the partitions of that computer's hard drive. I have no where else to put it all, the hard drive of this laptop is only 30 GB, 1 partition of the other hard drive is nearly 60 GB. I have some things on this laptop but not everything.

Windows just doesn't seem to want to work with your computer. Can you boot into Last Known Good Configuration?

I can boot into Last Known Good Configuration once, then I either lock up or get rebooted, then I can't get back in unless I turn it off for a while. Yes but the question is what happened, what changed, to make Windows not want to work with this computer anymore because it had SP2 on it before along with any other updates that Microsoft had to throw at it. The only thing it didn't have on it before was IE8 because I didn't want to switch from IE7 yet. Could this be a corruption of the Master Boot Record? If not, then I'm still thinking motherboard. And I was looking at some on TigerDirect but I would have to use my current CPU chip because the current 3.2 chips are ridiculously expensive so the reasonably priced board/chip combos come with a 2.something CPU chip and that would be going backwards for me.

Need a screenshot of Speedfan, and after the repair installation, don't install anything else (this is my mistake)

Ok.

I need you to backup all your data to an external drive and to keep that safe. Forget the repair, you have a reinstallation or Windows CD, right?

I was thinking of deleting and resizing the partitions on your hard drive so that you have one contiguous partition. This is better b/c your data will always be safe on an external drive (that is where you should store all your data too). If you need to reformat all that you will have to do is reinstall programs and updates.

Lets begin with this... first follow the directions here:https://sites.google.com/site/troubleshootingwizards/Home/backup-files-without-windows
Get all your important data to an external drive.

Hi,
I'm sorry it took me so long. I repartitioned and reformatted my SATA drive, then copied all the files from the other drive to the SATA drive. I could do anything with the SATA drive with the MaxBlast software but I couldn't get Windows to act right with that drive. I initially tried to make the SATA drive bootable and install Windows on it but once Windows got to the point in the installation that it's supposed to reboot the system, it wouldn't boot up on the SATA drive. So then I went back and re-did the SATA drive as an extra storage drive, the system wouldn't boot that way either so I just disabled the port in BIOS.

I went back to focusing on the IDE drive. I formatted the C partition again. This time I only disabled the L1 & L2 caching and nothing else because it seemed to install just fine as long as it was ridiculously slow and disabling just the caching made it slow enough to work. So this time I do have tabs for the display properties, I think that's because the video shadowing was still enabled. So with Windows installed and no where else to put my files other than this laptop I enabled the network on the main computer (it was already enabled on this laptop) to try and transfer as many files as possible. I could put the files in the network share folders but if I tried to cut or copy them from the network share folders on to this laptop then that would either lock up or reboot the main computer. So then I had to burn files to a CD, I had one 700 MB rewritable CD for several GB of files. Little by little, I burned the files on to the CD, copied them off of the CD, erase the CD then burned more files on it again. I did that until I got to about 1.89 GB on this laptop and had to stop to go through files to make more space because I had more files to copy. All that took quite a while and I had to find a program to remove the duplicates from my email too.

So once all that was finally done and I had all the necessary files somewhere else besides on that drive I then tried the SATA drive again to see if I could at least see the files on the drive. I could see the files on the drive once, then everything locked up and I couldn't boot up with the SATA port enabled again. I disabled the SATA port again, booted up, found some screen capture software to give you the Fan Speed screen shots and I have 5 various screen shots of Fan Speed. I repartitioned the drive and tried to reinstall Windows. Half way through the reinstallation I got the BSOD and that's where it still sits, out of shear frustration I turned the monitor off and just left it. The BSOD said:

"DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x000000D1 (0xD82DF578, 0x00000005, 0x00000001, 0xF7790C52)
*** atapi.sys - Address F7790C52 base at F7788000, DateStamp 3d6ddb04"

I am getting confused on the situation now...
Answer the questions...
On the computer you are fixing, which drive is plugged in? The SATA or the IDE one?
Can you describe the partitions on each one?
Are all your files backed up on an external drive... if not, do that now as we will have to reformat.

I am starting to think that this is a problem with the IDE drive, or with the mobo.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to confuse you.

Answer the questions...

The IDE drive is the drive I've been using. The SATA port is disabled because my system will not work with the SATA drive except when I boot with MaxBlast software. So I used the MaxBlast software to copy all the files from the IDE drive to the SATA drive, with most files also copied to the laptop drive as well.

Can you describe the partitions on each one?

The IDE drive was repartitioned so that it now has partitions of C:=53GB, D:=50GB & E:=60GB. The SATA drive was also repartitioned before the files were copied to it, so that it now has partitions of C:=50GB, D:=50GB & E:=60GB.

Are all your files backed up on an external drive... if not, do that now as we will have to reformat.

Yes, that's what took me so long. All the files were copied to the SATA drive, with most files also copied to the laptop drive as well. Once I did copy my files to other drives I then repartitioned and reformatted the IDE drive but that did not change the situation because I still was not able to install Windows normally.

I am starting to think that this is a problem with the IDE drive, or with the mobo.

The IDE drive was tested with no errors. I think the problem is the motherboard especially since it seems to have problems working with it's own components. Like sometimes it works with the PS2 port, sometimes it doesn't, it worked with the SATA drive for a while when I first got the drive, then 3 months later it wouldn't. Now it won't work with 1/2 the memory, the network and either the hard drive or Windows. I think it's been dying slowly over time and all that's left now is for it to completely die and not come on at all. Thank you.
:)
