Most issues with Service Pack installation are because of 2 issues:
- malware
- outdated drivers
I'd suggest checking to see if there may be an infection on your system in the Malware forums here: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Virus-Spywa...emoval-f37.html
Then check at the website of your system manufacturer for any outdated drivers.
Once they're updated, then try the service pack installation again.

I know I don't have malware, but I'll check my drivers. Right now I'm trying restore in safe mode.

Safe mode worked for a while and system restore was working well until it finished and booted back up and this time, it said system restore wasn't working because of an error with its shadow volume copy.

If you have Vista DVD...

If you don't have Vista DVD...
1. Create Vista Recovery Disc.
Option 1:

Option 2:
Download Vista Recovery Disc iso image: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vist...-disc-download/
Burn it to CD, or DVD: http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning...+to+a+CD+or+DVD
2. Boot from created disk.
At first screen click on Repair your computer:

This will bring you to a new screen where the repair process will look for all Windows Vista installations on your computer. When done you will be presented with the System Recovery Options dialog box:

After this, it will present you with a list of options including startup repair, system restore and command prompt:

Try System Restore, first.
If that doesn't work, try Startup Repair.

Sorry, this had nothing to do with service pack 2 itself. My firewall HIPS application, Online Armor was causing the system restore problem. That was a bug a couple people had with the software. The rest was due to the pending.xml files which when deleted the system worked fine.
