One more thing: just to be clear, I'm pretty sure the actual computer itself boots fine. When it starts, I can hear the initial Windows greeting tone, and if I look at the screen extremely close, I can actually see the desktop and boot sequence running perfectly normal. So I don't think it's an issue with the computer. Maybe the monitor is going? Although again, why would it boot fine with no monitor issues after it's disconnected?
