not a win32 application for every download/set-up/exe

My AVG refused to update, so i uninstalled and attempted to install avast. Kept getting not a win 32 application error message while running any setup's... Even going to the Malware and Spyware Cleaning Guide, I couldnt do the prep work because of this. Im not even sure where to start. I tried to run the set-up of avast in safe mode to no avail... i attempt to run a download and it says 0% and just keeps there, or dispplays the error message I said above. At this instant, I have no antivirus...
Is there any way to get help if I cannot complete even a download?

I had a bunch of trouble years back and whoever helped me here saved my entire system... so Im hoping someone has an idea..?
