Hi. I'm having a problem with my work laptop. It's a Dell Vostro 1500, running XP SP3.

I had some malware issues earlier in the week, but they seem to be sorted now.

I'm occasionally getting a pop up from McAfee saying it has blocked a buffer overflow at C:\\system32\wuauclt.exe though it isn't happening as much now either.

On trying to shutdown the computer, I get the following stop error:

0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x8064CE4D, 0xB933DB14, 0x00000000)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete

I've downloaded all the updates from Microsoft, and Dell that were available, though because the error happens on shutdown I have been unable to run the BIOS update that is available.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

There might still be some remnants of malware on your computer. Go here: http://www.geekstogo...uide-t2852.html
Follow that guide, and post in the Malware Forum with the required logs.

Also go to the directory C:\Windows\Minidump
Make sure hidden files are visible.
Then zip up all the recent files there (within a week)
Attach the .zip archive to your next post.

Thank you DragonMaster Jay for the helpful info. :)

McAfee is not allowed to read that file. The error popped up is a bug in McAfee products, as normally that file is added in the exceptions to scanning.

I'm hoping this is the info you are asking for.

For some reason I couldn't attach it here. It just timed out on me.

Some of these dumps signify XP Service Pack 1 and 2 errors.

What is the current service pack you are runnning?

Windows XP should be updated to Service Pack 3.

The reason why I say this is because you have three compatibility issues.

1. Audio driver: driver is younger than the service pack.
Sigmatel 9205 << Recommend driver reinstall.

2. Antivirus running triggers BSOD. Get the latest updates/service packs from Microsoft Windows Update.

3. Dell drivers. Mainly BIOS. A simple update of BIOS might help.

From what it looked like, you have a Dell Vostro, running an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

Everything can be found in the Dell support section on Dell.com. (drivers)

McAfee causes some of your problems.
A component of Dell Support Service caused one.
Firefox Helper caused one.
I can see that SFC caused many.
All of your problems are caused by some process, but the failing image is usually the NT Kernel.

Since different processes are causing your problem, the issue may not be the failing processes themselves.

Here is the driver download page: http://support.dell..../...tid=&impid=
Give me an Everest Report. Click on "Everest Instructions" in my sig and follow the steps.

Thanks for your help so far. When I boot the computer in safe mode it says I'm running SP3.

I do have the updated BIOS file, but the BSOD on shutdown won't let it run.

I'll start on the list you've given me now...

I managed to update the Sigmatel driver, but the BIOS update gave me two error codes

Application Return Error: 0x00000610
Windows Return Error: 0x00000002

Here is the Everest Report. I tried to check the boxes, like in the instructions on your sig, but the options available to me were different. I got a message on opening the program that it didn't fully support the system I have.

I had to zip the file. It was far too big to post.

Edit: Apparently it is a known issue for Dell to have this problem with that specific download.

Here is the info from the extraction of your Everest file. I recommend you get the BIOS update from Phoenix instead.

Try DragonMaster Jay's suggestion above, and also test your RAM. Try reseating it, and using Memtest. Click on "Memtest Instructions" in my sig, and post the results.

Ok, I'm an idiot. I'm having trouble finding the updated driver on the phoenix site. There are so many product options, I don't know what I'm looking at.

I'll have to run the Memtest later tonight. I dont have discs with me at the moment.

I can't find a BIOS update anywhere except on the Dell website too.
Download this BIOS file: http://support.dell....eid=252223#3DOS
Then create a bootable floppy: http://www.computerhope.com/boot.htm

Run the BIOS update utility from DOS environment (Non-Windows users)

NOTE: You will need to provide a bootable DOS diskette. This executable file does not create the DOS system files.

Copy the file 1500_A06.EXE to a bootable floppy.

Boot from the floppy to the DOS prompt.

Run the file by typing Y:\1500_A06.EXE (where y is the drive letter where the executable is located).

Ok, I was able to make a boot disc by using this guide: http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/#clean, and I'm about to try it, so I hope it doesn't mess everything up, otherwise I'm screwed.

Add your own files, needed to upgrade your BIOS, to the cds\clean\bootdisk\ folder.

Remember this step. Add the BIOS file mentioned in my earlier post.

Once you boot, use the command above.

Yep I added the file in the correct folder, but when I go to boot from the disc the screen comes up as:

"Loading FreeDOS
ROOT FAT KERNEL GO!" and that's as far as I get. There's no prompt for me to type anything in.
