Hello
Last December i built a new computer with the help of a friend. The computer has never been stable and constantly crashing during games and will eventually give me a BSOD error.
The computer is near unusable. I regularly scan with norton and adaware, i have tried formatting several times and replaced almost every part but i have not been able to resolve the problem. Its not an overheating problem as i tried a fan and it didnt change anything.
I have included a hardware report from everest home edition. Any advice would be very much appreciated as I am about to go crazy.
Thanks very much.

hi
looking at you things it could be two things I can see
your cpu temp is 57 did you use a pad or paste under your cpu heat sink ?
is your chip the XP 3000+ 333fbs or the XP 3000+ 333fbs?

Hi Tazz thanks for answering.
The chip is a XP 3000+ 333fbs, and i stuck a huge house fan into the box which dropped the temperatures to the low 40s, but i still had the same problem.
Someone has raised the possibility that the RAM is incompatible with the motherboard but i am unable to find out if this is true. Anyone have any ideas?
Sorry for the late reply.
Thanks.

Hi,

Remove the heat sink (hs) and clean the cpu and hs with a piece of credit card then clean the remainder with rubbing alcohol.
Reapply thermal paste preferable artic silver5 and follow the instructions on thier website on how to apply.
If you have to have a huge house fan next to it to lower the cpu temp then thats one problem that needs to be fixed before continuing because you can not troubleshoot other hardware if a overheat problem exists

After this if the problem contiues then run memtest 86 to test the ram and report back.

Hi -I have had similar problems in the past. 2 main faults being 1) Too much heat gel on the CPU - it leaked out and caused failures (worked fine after cleaning) and 2) Power supply not giving enough juiced to run all the peripherals.

I now have a similar unit to yours (up in the CPU but down in the video cards etc and running 3 hard drives). I have found a 400w power supply to be just enough (they still fail though). I note that you did not list your power supply - what have you installed?

Hope this helps guide you to a solution.

Hey thanks for the replys. I can confirm its not a power supply problem. I too suspect the motherboard but i havent been able to replace it. I hope this is the problem because i will be glad to fix this problem after 6 months of frustration.

Does anyone have an opinion on the nforce motherboard? Is it likely to cause such problems? Thanks for reading.

After reading your everest report like I said before you have a overheat problem the cpu temp is at 57c when at idle.

Make sure the hs (heat sink) is mounted correctly it is possable for a socket A hs to installed 180 degrees in the wrong direction. The step on the hs has to face the part of the socket that says "462"

If you remove the hs you must clean with rubbing acohol and apply new thermal paste, if you used the stock hs that came with a themal pad make sure you removed the plastic covering that protects the themal pad during shipping.

Another thing that I noticed is your vcore is set to 1.7 go into bios and load the defaults and check the vcore if its still at 1.7 lower it to 1.65.

report back what you find.

Thanks for the suggestion but he problem happens no matter what temperature i get the cpu to run at - it's not a cpu overheating problem.

OK, so you don't think heat is a problem and perhaps thats not your primary problem but the simple fact is - you are running hotter than you need to be. Having said that, I'll tell you that you are not taking advantage of the Nvidia chipset's dual channel features with that one stick of no name memory. The board was designed to run dual channel memory and even though you got the 333mhz Athlon 3000+, I'd suggest you get some good PC3200 dual channel memory. It will run fine at 333Mhz and this gives you the option to run it at 400Mhz too. That board with decent memory can even be configured to run your processor at 400Mhz (2x200) and can easily be OC'ed to 11x200 while running in the low 40's.

As to the post re: NVidia making lousy chipsets - its obvious that some are quite well schooled in demonstrating their apptitude for technology and general level of knowledge.

:tazz:

Oh yeah, almost forgot - in my book your problem is memory related. Either the stick itself or the timings or both. You went cheap and your machine is paying you back for that decision.
