I know that uploaded avatars are limited to 40kb, but what about images that are hosted on our own server?
Is there a size limit to linked avatars?

Just asking, because I was cleaning up some old files on my computer, and came across an image I would love to use, but it's 240kb.

Too big. Size restrictions aren't about server storage. They're about respecting dial-up, mobile, and other low-bandwidth users.

Depending on the size / format used on the picture you can usually get that 240kb down to a much lower number

For example, .bmp (bitmap) files are much bigger then jpeg (Joint Photographic Experts Group, .jpg) files.

Well, since I saw another avatar question in this forum, figured it was as good as any for my own. I've uploaded a new avatar. It shows up on my control panel has having been uploaded but it ain't showin' up nowhere's else. Have any idea how to fix that?

Is it a Lord of the Rings avatar? If so, it's showing up.

If it's still not showing up for you, try hitting CTRL+F5.

Have you tried compressing your image? Do you know how to do it? If no, I can help.

What graphics program do you have installed on your computer; (Photoshop Paint Shop Pro, etc)?

Still, 240KB is HUGE in file size. I'm pretty sure I can get that smaller for you. If you'd like, PM me the graphic and I'll work on it for you.

Not questioning you or the terms of use by any means, but is there certain exceptions or is the rule just not strictly enforced?

I've seen many animated avatars just in my one week of being here.

We discourage the use of animated gifs, but it's not something we strictly enforce unless someone complains, or a mod/admin finds it objectionable.
