Hello all,

I have a PC that is disconnecting from the network for no reason and out of the blue. Only programs on it is the Point-of-Sale software and the drivers for the motherboard.

The software will run perfectly fine for a couple days then all of a sudden get supper slow and crash by not being able to connect with the server… we then wait a minute and restart the program and it usually works fine. However sometime we do have to restart the PC to get things back to normal.

I just updated the LAN driver and installed a brand new cable running it to the gigabyte switch… but it’s still acting up. And what is even odder is when I first did this it would run at 1 gig, but in the past 2 weeks it stays connected at 100meg. Even after I restart the PC and manually turn off the LAN and restart it.

Specs:
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L
CPU: Dual-Core Intel 775 (can’t remember the exact speed)
RAM: 4 gig Corsair
LAN: using on-board

Thanks for the help all!

Download and install EVEREST
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.

DO NOT INCLUDE ANYTHING UNDER THE LINE THAT SAYS [u][b] "DEBUG- PCI"

in fact, all the PC's on the network lose connection... but not at the same time, they are different.
What could this be?

I've done Spyware/Virus testing and there is nothing on any of the machines.

Thanks all!

Try replacing the NIC. What else is connected to the gigabit switch?

Everything is new, even the CAT cables, i ran new everything trying to fix this problem... and it's still doing this.

Thoughts?

OK, so the PC's are not the issue. Are they all connected to the same switch? If so, you need to replace the switch.

I assume this is how you have your network setup, please amend if I am incorrect in any aspect. This will help to isolate the failing hardware, since it seems that it is a hardware issue.

Modem -> Router -> Gigabit Switch -> 3 PC's

I use to have a regular 10/100 switch, and replaced it with a new gigabyte switch... i even changed around the ports on the new one and it still dosent do anything.

Thoughts?

Hello integraoligist,

Here's a small list of questions I came up with to help you troubleshoot this problem.

  • Does your Router support a Gigabit connection?
  • Which cables did you buy? Do they support Gigabit?
  • What happens when you connect a PC directly with the router?
  • Do you also have a modem? Or is this a router that's directly in touch with your ISP?
  • You said they all disconnect, but not at the same time. Is there a pattern in it or completely random?
  • Can you give us the make / model of the router?

After answering these questions we've eliminated the majority of options. :)

Regards,
Olrik

Can you try to replace that gigabit switch? How old is it?

I originally had a Linksys 10/100 switch when the problem started... i then changed it to a DLink 10/100 switch, problem was still there, so i just upgraded everything and now have a gigabyte switch. So it's pretty much the 3rd switch and still the same problem...

Hello integraoligist,

Here's a small list of questions I came up with to help you troubleshoot this problem.

[1]Does your Router support a Gigabit connection?
[2]Which cables did you buy? Do they support Gigabit?
[3]What happens when you connect a PC directly with the router?
[4]Do you also have a modem? Or is this a router that's directly in touch with your ISP?
[5]You said they all disconnect, but not at the same time. Is there a pattern in it or completely random?
[6]Can you give us the make / model of the router?

After answering these questions we've eliminated the majority of options. :)

Olrik

1. Router is not a gigabyte, however the new Switch is and everything is talking across the switch...
2. i replaced all cables with these type:
http://www.tigerdire...?Sku=C184-15216
3. the same thing happens when one is connected directly to the router... in fact the router sits next to my office PC, so when the office PC loses connection with the rest of the PC's, the router is still working correctly (no red/orange lights going on/off, everything stays normal)
4. No modem, the DSL phone line connects directly into the router
5. they are all completly random. They USE TO all disconnect at the same time, but I did the following on all the PC's, now they all disconnect randomly:
A. removed Windows Search 4.0
B. turned off indexing on all drives
C. turned off all "power saving" options, from the monitor to the hdd to the NIC.

6. Router: 2-wire - 2701-hg-b
Switch: Netgear - GS608

Thoughts?
Thanks again all!

Hello again :)

I think I need to explain something here concerning what I asked on the first question (although I did get enough information).

1. Router is not a gigabyte, however the new Switch is and everything is talking across the switch...

I asked if the Router was a "gigaBIT" supported router, where 'gigabit' indicates a speed.
gigaBYTE however (the one your talking about) is a brand for computer parts. :)

6. Router: 2-wire - 2701-hg-b
Switch: Netgear - GS608

I looked up the 2 models, and it appears that the Router does not support gigabit speeds (1000 megabit/second). The switch does, though.

I'd like to see some more information. Please follow the steps below.
  • Go to Start and open Run.
  • In the Box, type in cmd
  • A black box will appear. Type in: ipconfig /all
  • A lot of information will appear, Please right click the black window and hit mark.
  • Select every line of text you recieved and hit Enter to copy.
  • Then paste it into your next reply.

Regards,
Olrik

Hello again,

It sounds like the router is the bad guy in this little network. Everything supports gigabit, but the router. And considering the router is the 'center' of the network, everything goes past the router making it the 'weakest link' and 'dragging' your connection down to 100Mb/s.

Olrik
