I have HP a6200n , AMD 64x2 Dual Core 5000+ 2.6 gHz , 2 gigs ram ... windows Vista

ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L SCSI CD ROM DEVICE <---- description from device Manager

I have an all in one , cd rom , burner and lightscribe disc drive... Now it will only see some games, and not others , says please insert disc , and blank cds, will read as empty drive in my computer . I can see some games wont even spin , they are in the same position they were in when i put them there...But some games will play no problem , so its not really random , just selective I guess.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software for the drive and looked at the device manager and it says its working properly and has the latest drivers ...

Any ideas ?

Go to the manufacturer website of your DVD drive and input the model number and look for firmware update.
Most likely you will download the newest update and then install it. Works much like installing a program.

ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L is the model and manufacturer. It is a re-branded Lite-On drive.

Download the Nero Infotool here, http://www.softpedia...-InfoTool.shtml

Please give me the firmware revision so I can see if an update is available.

It appears this is the most current revision, although I will keep looking. Is it a SATA drive or IDE? Is it just having a problem seeing blank and burned media or is it a disc that came from the store?

I dont know how to tell if its sata or ide ...

It used to work with anything , now it wont do recognize blank discs,CD or DVD , or movie dvds, or any of my games.
I hear a weird faint beepedy whirling sound with the games and blank discs in ... and sometimes they havent even spun , when i open them they are in the same position.
I did delete the upper and lower filters too...

Is it just time for a new drive ?

ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L SCSI CD ROM DEVICE

That doesn't mean anything. I'm pretty sure HP didn't or ever did put a SCSI CD ROM in a home pc.

The whirling could just be the drive spinning up. I think it would be safe to say at this point, since its not just with the same media and with no drive revision update, replace the drive. If you need a suggestion for a replacement, please let us know.

If you bought it from a online company all you should have to do is contact them for RMA and ask for a exchange.
If you bought it from a Big Box Store (Bestbuy for instance), you should have no problem returning it for the correct type.

i had to uninstall and reinstall my cd drive via the device manager and uninstall nero burning rom which never had a conflict with mediamonkey before. now i am unable to burn a cd, read or create data discs and it took a few weeks before i was able to play a music cd again but that's only after the cd drive spits out a disc 3 or 4 times before it decides to play it. i was informed that my upper and lower filters were missing and my cd drive needed to have a driver update (lite-on ltr- 24102m). after scouting the internet, i was informed that there is no driver update available for my burner and lite-on doesn't have any info to assist me. i tried the paths given by microsoft but it didn't work because i had no upper or lower filters anymore to configure and i have no idea how they disappeared. so now i'm stuck with a picky cd rom and some nero junk still on my pc although i used the nero cleaning utility.
how is it possible that i can rip and play audio cds but unable to burn them or create/read data files when my upper or lower filters are missing?

i actually thought my issue was the type of blank discs i was buying but now i'm stuck with 180 blank discs and nothing to put on them. i seeked assistance from dell but their firmware does not apply to my model of cd drive. any help on this issue will be appreciated.

specs:
dell dimensions 4400
windows xp sp3
lite-on ltr-24102m cd "burning" rom
ide ata/atapi controllers
media players: mediamonkey gold, windows media player 11, formerly used nero cd burning rom for data discs
