Gateway laptop running Windows XP SP2... Loaded programs today and noticed on boot up a quick message "invalid bood.ini file booting from c:\windows" The sys does boot to windows, but is missing the normal users login window, and most of the programs listed under, start-programs.
Been unable to save a new xp boot.ini in system configuraton window. Wont allow me to type anything in, then Crashes......."Encountered a problem, and needs to close"

Help anyone!!!!

Malware can cause error like this. Good suggestion.

You can also try burning a Recovery Console disc and then using the bootcfg /rebuild command. Click on Recovery Console Instructions in my sig, and follow the directions to create a CD, and then boot from it. Click on Repair Common Windows Startup Problems in my sig and follow the directions using the CD you just burned.
