Can you please repeat the steps from my first post; I'd like to get an update on things. Secondly, on the XP and Vista machine, I'd like to see what software you have running; normally an inability to ping can be ruled down to software interference, although in the Vista's case it may be something else.

Step 1 - Generate a startup and uninstall list:
Please download HijackThis (if you do not already have it) and install it -- once it is installed, restart your computer. Once the computer starts up, launch HijackThis and then select the option Open the Misc Tools section -- select Generate StartupList log. Save the startup list in a safe location. Now select the option Open Uninstall Manager and then click Save list -- save it to a safe location. Please post the contents of the startup list and the uninstall list in your next response.

It looks like there's a fair chunk of bloatware still on your machine; we'll clear that up after we fix your connection.

The issue keeps coming back to the way your network is setup; there are minor discrepencies between the two (mainly DNS issues) which are likely the cause of your file sharing issues.

On the Vista machine, do the following:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  • In the new window, right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
  • Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then press the Properties button.
  • In this window, please confirm that Obtain DNS server address automatically is selected. If it is not, please select it.
  • Press OK to exit.
There's absolutely not reason for the different types of connections you have; we'll probably end up cleaning those up (starting from a machine that if you lose the Internet, it won't be crippling -- so hopefully you have a spare(ish) machine?). However, I would like to see an ipconfig /all from one of the other machines that we haven't seen yet. I'd just like to know whether the Vista is the odd one out, or if its the XP or something else.

PS: I couldn't see any problematic software running, so it's likely just a routing issue.

the DNS bubble was already full O_o

it's alright for the xp computer to lose connection. and that odd network connection that i'm not sure why it's there? not present on the vista one. i called my ip provider and they said they had never heard of it. they took control of my computer and everything.

Thanks Rik.

Before we play around with your connection, let's try to bring the Vista machine in line with the other machines, since it appears to be the odd one out.

So, on the Vista machine, please configure a static IP.

Step 1 - Configure a Static IP:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  • In the new window, right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
  • Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then press the Properties button.
  • Select the option Use the following IP Address: and then enter in the following details:
    • IP Address: 192.168.1.112
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
  • Select Use the following DNS Servers and enter in two DNS Servers.
    • Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.254.254
    • Alternate DNS Server: <leave blank>
  • Press OK.
If you experience any connectivity issues, then simply revert the settings back to their respective automatic settings, which should allow you to regain a connection.

Once you have a static IP in place, try to communicate between the PC's; try pinging by names and IP's and also try typing "\\scythe" into the Run box. Any luck?

I'm glad to hear there's at least been an improvement :)

Unfortunately, now we need to go back to step 1 so that I can see what's going on. When you type \\RIK into the Run box (from scythe) what error message does it give you?

Please also post fresh copies of these:

Step 1 - File Sharing Troubleshooting (Windows XP):
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: the single '>' and double '>>' are intentional; please type the commands exactly as they appear):
    • ipconfig /all > C:\results.txt
    • net view >> C:\results.txt
    • net share >> C:\results.txt
    • nbtstat -n >> C:\results.txt
  • Once the above commands have completed, navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.
Step 2 - File Sharing Troubleshooting (Windows Vista):
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator
Thanks,
- Dan

how come when i right click on a file and hit 'share...' on my vista machine, scythe still isn't an option...?

Some times this is simply a matter of playing the waiting game. The network often takes a few machine restarts in order to fully update the appropriate network maps; if you haven't restarted your machines yet, do so. If you have, continue normal operation for a few days and see if they eventually pop up. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot we can do to speed this process up.

Aside from the network map not being up to date, it looks like everyone is seeing everyone else fine and communicating appropriately, with the correct folders visible.

i can view the public file when i hit \\rik, but the rest say access are denied :/

When you have password sharing disabled, everyone connecting to a Vista machine is viewed as a Guest, meaning that you need to set appropriate permission levels to ensure everyone can access files. The public folder has the appropriate permissions in place by default; this suggests that this is simply a permission issue with the rest of your files.

On one of your files (or create a new test file), try the following.

Step 1 - Setting Permissions (Windows Vista):
  • Right-click on a file/folder you would like to share and select Properties
  • In the Properties window, select the Sharing tab and then press the Share... button.
  • In the Choose people to share with window, press the down arrow and select Everyone -- press the Add button.
  • The Everyone user should now be in the permissions section; click on it and change the permission level to Read/Write and then press the Share button.
Now try to access this new file/folder from the XP machine; can you?

no, and when i restarted the public folder became inaccessible as well.
*edit* well i just tried again and now i can access the public and sharing folders (the sharing folder is one on my desktop that i made), but i still can't write.

but i did not see a 'read/write' option in the share options dropdown. there is co-owner, reader, and contributor. (picked co-owner)

also- i decided to try writing to scythe from rik (vista to xp), and that is also a no go. it says i need permission...

since you said that everyone is viewed as a guest, i also made the guest option a co-owner. didn't work either

and apparently the network map is STILL not up to date :/

*edit* also, i tried to connect to a public wireless hub, and i could only get on local, no internet. :/ i changed it to automatic instead of static, and it worked fine. any fix for this?
