Close everything but Ad-aware?

I'm getting ready to scan my computer but I'm told via the "start here" link that all programs need to be closed before scanning. I'm not sure where to do this (ctrl/alt/del ?) or what is safe to close in XP home.

u could just go in safe mode and then scan
