Software registration not recognizing internet connection

I have purchased 2 different software packages recently and they both gave me the same error when I tried to register them.
"Connection cannot be found, please try again"
I know for a fact I am connected, just not sure why the softare is not recognizing it???
One sofware package was Office 2007, the other Norton. Can't use either till I figure this out. Any elp would be greatly appreciated.

Office you can activate by telephone.
Norton you can apparently activate by telephone providing the computer isn't connected to the internet in any way, shape or form.
