HELP PLEASE: seagate freeagent external hard drive

Right, i went to use the external hard drive today, so when i conected it up, nothing happened the light strip never came on and nothing showed on my laptop,

so i took out the usb lead and put my volt stick against the hard drive and power was coming into the hard drive, so thats ok. I then took out the mains lead and connected the hard drive to the laptop with the usb lead and tested again with volt stick and that showed power coming from the laptop to the hard drive, so that was fine.

so everythig is fine with the connections.

so does anyone have any ideas of what the problem could be?, and could you help me please?
