mouse gets stuck, please help!

The laptop starts up and performs well, untill at some point, the mouse gets stuck, and only moves upwards and downwards. I can only restart it again using the keyword board. It is really annoying, please help!

How old is the system?
Anything updated as far as hardware or software prior to issue starting?
Anything downloaded from internet just prior to issue starting?
Any software added prior to issue?
What's the make and model of laptop?
