I've located an article that might answer your questions. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946765
Not all of that 40Gb is Vista, i'd guess about 10Gb is the actual OS.
Some common maintenance tools that I find handy are as follows...
1) Cleanup! - http://stevengould.o.../CleanUp452.exe
2) CCleaner - http://www.filehippo...nload_ccleaner/
3) Auslogics Disk Defrag - http://download.cnet...4-10567503.html
4) Removing unwanted or used programs
5) Using Disk Cleanup to free some space - Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
* It might be worth noting the more options tab under the Disk Cleanup utility.

After almost two years in use, all updates, service packs, my Vista Windows folder is almost 22GB in size.
