OK. I followed a page off here to fix using the Windows Recovery Console, but my laptop (the one not broken) closed down and for some reason I cannot get back to that page. (believe me, I have looked).

The second half of the fix involved running regedit and restoring something.

While I can still logon now, I cannot run certain programs. For example, it will not let me start up zune. It told me to uninstall and reinstall. Well, it tells me resources are not available to bring up the Add/Remove Programs.

I deleted Zune and tried to reinstall. It gets about 20% done and gives me this:

The Windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if youa re running Windows in safe mode (I am not), or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

Error code: 0x800706041.

Other programs are acting spotty as well. Not sure what the problem is, but I am hoping someone here can figure it out.

Thanks.

Howdy and welcome to GTG:

Try downloading and installing the newest WINDOWS INSTALLER.

See if that helps.

It says the service pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying.

There is no need to install this update.

Any ideas? And thanks again for the help.

Try Windows Installer CleanUp Utility: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Anything else, beside Zune?

Some programs work. Some don't. For example, Excel and Word will not start but paint will. (The first two say 'This action is only valid for products that are currently installed' -- which they were).

Webroot cannot install to load either.

When I bring up Control Panel, I get a pop up window that says 'Resources are not available' It brings up the normal icons, but when I go to add/remove programs, there is only one program availbable -- the one I managed to install off the web to hopefully clean up my registry. Needless to say, that failed horribly too.

Thank you everyone for your help. At least the beer is calming me down enough to know take a sledgehammer to it.

I suspect, you have some system files messed up.
