I currently have a Gateway 1.3mHz; 1 gig memory; running XP Pro service pack 3. The Harddrive is a WD 80gig with approx. 76 gigs being used. Zonealarm Suite runs most of the time to scan for spyware/viruses but, lately it has not been able to achieve a full scan.

For two or three days now it has begun to lockup, almost like hybernation and will not wake up and must be hardbooted to wakeup however, this is becoming more frequent. I tried to access your site with it early but, only to have it lock up while I was reading through the first thread of interest.

I was thinking of reloading XP along with the service pack once again but, I cannot get that much usage out of it.

I tried running in safe mode and was unable to startup. Both times the start up stopped on a driver uga440?

I opened the box up and cleaned it up thinking it may be overheating but, still not successful.

I tried to run Norton Systemworks "WinDoctor" to check the registry and it locked up halfway through the scan as well.

Thank you for any input. Please, note, I may not be able to access a download from this computer but, I can use another home PC to download and use a jump drive to load any file.

Thanks for your help

On another note, I was able to run Windoctor and fix several registry errors

I did notice that my clock had changed from 12 hr to 24 hr setting for some unknown reason

I still have an issue after only up for a short time the freeze up continues.

I try to run Repair from my disc only to have it lock during the process

Does this seem a sign of a HDD meltdown or is the a virus/malware issue?

The Harddrive is a WD 80gig with approx. 76 gigs being used

This is your main issue.
Windows needs at least 15% of a free space (12GB in your case).
You need to make some room.

I believe you are correct, I was able to free up another 3-4 gigs and that seems to have stopped the freezing on the most part. I was actually able to scan the system both virus & spyware Zonealarm quarantined "Win32 Agent2.fft" and cleaned about 19 spywares...I am considering getting an external HD for this box to steamline it more in the near future.

thanks again :)
