Can anyone tell me if it is possible to install a HDD from a dead PC loaded with with XP into a PC loaded with windows 95 as a slave or a master, to retrieve data?

I have tried it but although the PC recognises the presence of a slave I cannot access the data. Is this because of the different OS?

Or is there a way?
