Hi:

Running Win XP Pro on a Gateway desktop. The Search Assistant (with the animated dog) starts just fine when I open the application. As soon as I type in a query, the dog freezes and the application is unresponsive. I use CTRL-ALT-DELETE to free the system. The application works fine in SAFE mode.

Thank you.

Welcome to WhoCrashed Home Edition 1.01
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This program checks for drivers which have been crashing your computer.

Whenever a computer suddenly reboots without displaying any notice or blue screen of death, the first thing that is often though about is a hardware failure. In reality, on Windows most crashes are caused by malfunctioning device drivers and kernel modules. In case of a kernel error, most computers do not show a blue screen unless they are configured to do so. Instead these systems suddenly reboot without any notice.

This program does post-mortem crash dump analysis with the single click of a button.

To obtain technical support visit www.resplendence.com/support

To check if a newer version of this program is available, click here.

Just click the Analyze button for a comprehensible report ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Home Edition notice
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This version of WhoCrashed is free for use at home only. If you would like to use this software at work or in a commercial environment you should get the professional edition. The professional edition of WhoCrashed also allows analysis of crashdumps on remote drives and computers on the network and offers more detailed analysis.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Analysis
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crash dump directory: C:\WINNT\Minidump

Crash dumps are enabled on your computer.

On Tue 3/24/2009 2:56:52 PM your computer crashed
This was likely caused by the following module: incdrm.sys
Bugcheck code: 0x100000D1 (0x1BC4A00, 0x2, 0x1, 0xF7A17B14)
Error: Unknown
file path: C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\incdrm.sys

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is really responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

Ok issue #1:

It may not be playing a part in this but just a FYI
System Memory 752 MB (DDR SDRAM)
You are just above the minimum for XP to run correctly. It seems to like one gig as a sweet spot. As I said probably not causing your problem but in case you want to increase it follow the next steps.

Go HERE and run the Crucial online scanner.
This will give you the exact memory configuration for your system. You do not have to buy the memory from there, but write down the information and if you need assistance in purchasing the upgrade memory GTG can assist with suggestions also.

Second issue:

This one could be a problem.
C: (NTFS) 39205 MB (5222 MB free)
XP needs 15% of free space on your HD to run correctly. Right now you are running at about 7.5%

Please follow the next steps and we can try to clean this up some.

Open Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab, and UN-check:

+ LxrAutorun
+ SpybotSD TeaTimer

When done restart computer and then:

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged

What are you using for a
Antivirus
AntiMalware

I see you are using Spybot. This is good but the Teatimer uses alot of system resources and can slow your system down.

What I would suggest is Uninstalling All Programs you don't need or don't want anymore through Add/Remove Programs

Do this by going to
Start and then to Control Panel
Click Add/Remove Programs
Carefully choose the program(s) you don't need
Click on each Program then click Change/Remove and Follow the Uninstall Instructions

You may be prompted to Restart your computer.
Restart once you have all the programs you don't need uninstalled.
Be careful not to remove anything needed by your computer, some of which you may be unfamiliar with the name,

Hi:

I run AVG 8.5 and Malwarebytes daily; I run Microsoft's Window's Defender. Spybot Search and Destroy now has the Tea Timer and Resident Shield disabled; Spyware Blaster runs in the background. Hard drive space is limited temporarily until I get 3 DVD's off of my hard drive (4.2 GB x 3 = 12.6 GB additional space). I run Cleanup! weekly. I empty temp files and history weekly.

Aside from this, are we getting close to addressing my issue? I don't think the above configurations impacted why Search Assistant no longer works except in SAFE mode.

Please provide the next reasonable steps that we can look at.

Thanks.

Since it works in Safe mode then we are looking at a program problem or driver problem.

Lets see what you have in your startup
Please click on
Start and then on Run
Type in msconfig and then press enter
Now click on Startup
Next click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start
All Programs
Accessories
Paint
In the empty white area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your desktop

In your next reply attach the screenshot

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck everything and restart.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot and try Search Assistant
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.
Post back with the results

If this has no affect when finished then try the following steps:

Lets see what you have in your startup services area

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Services
Click on the Hide All Microsoft Services
Then uncheck everything and restart.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot and try Search Assistant
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.

Neither Services nor Startups had an effect: the Search mode froze throughout the exercise.

The next step then is to look at XP's itself.
We can do this by running a scan called SFC or System File Check
Do this by following the next steps. You will need your XP disk for this but if not I will include the directions to run the scan without the disk.

Go Start and then to Run ("Start Search" in Vista),
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK (Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows XP, it will simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it to Flyupload, and post download link.

If you don't have Windows CD....
This applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc"
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

Go Start and then Run
type in regedit and click OK

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries Values on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, usually D and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

Thanks to Broni for the instructions

Also just another FYI..
It is not a good ideal to run more then one each of the following

Antivirus
Anti Malware
Spyware protection
Firewall

AV's like AVG and Nortons are known resource hogs and will slow systems down.
A great alternative and free also are AV's like
Avast and Avira
Both are as effective as the above but alot less resource hungry.
I can't say much about Avira but Avast I run and it updates everyday with new virus definitions. Below I have added the info.

Please download Avast from my signature below. Please make sure you do the registration as it is good for a year or more. When it is due simply just reregister it.
Avast in my opinion is better because:

It's FREE to the Home User
It Updates it's Definitions daily
You can scan Individual Files, Folders and Drives
No buying new versions every year

You should never fill an NTFS drive more than 85% full, or the Master File Table [MFT] can become badly fragmented, making the drive slow....

you only have 13% free space...you need over 15% free...backup some of your data and delete it from your computer to free up some space
go to add remove programs in the control panel and uninstall INCD..even if its part of your cd burning software...
