To the best of my recollection there was only of the two and in my registry and I believe I deleted the Upperfilter. The way I read the instructions, it seemed to suggest not to worry if only one of the two was present (upper &/or lower), just delete what was there, whether it be one or both.

Sorry if I gave seemingly contradictory info; I just wasn't been explicit enough or perhaps because I tried a number of things in quick sequence I couldn't quite remember the order. I was having many problems with my DVD drive not burning, prior to removal of the filter in the registry. At the time when it all started, my Nero6 was burning maybe one out of 5 DVD's at best; it was sometimes recognizing there was a blank dvd in the drive and burning, but increasingly and most of the time it was giving me the message "the drive is in use" and thus would not burn. The DVD player was also not working at that point. Then, I upgrade to NERo9, hoping it would somehow help fix the problem. That didn't work, so at that point I then took the next step of deleting the filter. To the best of my recollection, that was the order. If it helps, some further context is that starting at least a few months prior to all of this, the DVD Shrink freeware that I often used to rip protected DVD's stopped being able to recognize any movie DVD's in the drive at all, with a "there is no disc in the drive" message. I attributed that to upgrades in the protection of the DVD's that prevented that particular software from working.

Nope. It doesn't register anything in my dvd drive. When I try the external burner it will sporadically flash a small dvd icon, but won't play.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.

I appreciate your help, but before proceeding I'd need to feel more confident about this process. It mentions that while it "won't delete datas programs, info or settings" it also goes on to say that "network and performance settings may sometimes be reset to their defaults". It also goes on to state the obvious that "if you install a fresh copy [XP] all data on that partition will be lost". My hard drive does have a partition, which was set up to allow my external hard drive where I keep a huge amount of music files. Do I have anything to be concerned about if I follow this procedure you're suggesting. Hope I'm making sense...

Normally, in 99%, cases nothing bad should happen, because Windows repair deals only with system files, not touching your data. That's how far my statement will go. In everyday computer operation, 1% can always go wrong, so there is never 100% guarantee. That's why, we DO make backups.
